The Opportunity

The Benefits Specialist is responsible for the administration, analysis, and continuous improvement of employee benefit programs across Canada. This role partners closely with internal HR teams, payroll, and external vendors including Sun Life, RBC Insurance, and GroupSource Inc. (GSI) to ensure effective delivery of competitive, compliant, and cost-effective benefits programs.

The role plays a key part in enhancing employee experience, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting organizational objectives through strong governance and vendor management.

Responsibilities:

• Administer Canadian employee benefit programs including health, dental, disability, life insurance, and retirement savings plans

• Administer and Manage Disability and Worker's compensation claims and RTW (Return-To-Work) claims

• Manage new hires including benefits enrollments, changes, terminations, and ongoing maintenance within UKG and vendor systems

• Act as the primary point of contact for Canadian employee benefit inquiries and issue resolution, including benefits orientations for new hires

• Develop and deliver clear communication materials regarding benefit programs

• Coordinate and execute annual enrollment processes and employee education sessions

• Promote understanding and utilization of available benefits

• Liaise with external providers including Ardent, Sun Life, RBC Insurance, and GSI.

• Monitor service levels, performance, and compliance with contractual agreements

• Support renewals, plan design changes, and vendor negotiations in partnership with NA and HR leadership

• Ensure benefits programs comply with applicable Canadian federal and provincial legislation

• Maintain accurate documentation of policies, procedures, and plan provisions

• Work with HRBP's and payroll to coordinate audits and reporting requirements

• Analyze utilization, trends, and cost drivers across benefit programs

• Prepare regular reports and dashboards for HR leadership and finance

• Provide insights and recommendations to optimize plan design and cost management

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in human resources, Business Administration, or a related field.

• 5+ years specifically in Canadian benefits administration

• Experience working with multi-province benefits practices and statutory leaves is highly valued.

• A strong understanding of:

• Canadian benefits practices and provincial requirements (e.g., Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Prince Edward Island)

• Statutory and protected leaves and related benefit continuations (provincial employment standards)

• Privacy and data handling expectations for employee information (as applicable by province and company policy)

• UKG for benefits administration systems

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders.

• Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure.
