Purpose of the Role
The Environmental Specialist is responsible for supporting and improving environmental performance across Lanes Group's operations. The role ensures compliance with environmental legislation, company standards, client requirements, and environmental management systems while promoting sustainable working practices throughout the business.
Working closely with operational teams, managers, clients, regulators, and external stakeholders, the Environmental Specialist will provide expert advice and guidance on environmental matters, helping to minimise environmental impact, reduce carbon emissions, improve resource efficiency, and support the Company's ESG and sustainability objectives. This aligns with existing environmental management and compliance responsibilities within the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
Environmental Compliance & Governance
• Provide specialist environmental advice and support across all business divisions.
• Ensure compliance with applicable environmental legislation, permits, licences, and client requirements.
• Support the maintenance and continual improvement of the Company's Environmental Management System (ISO 14001).
• Monitor changes in environmental legislation and advise the business on compliance requirements.
• Assist with environmental audits, inspections, and management reviews.
Environmental Performance
• Monitor and report on environmental KPIs, incidents, trends, and improvement actions.
• Support initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, waste generation, fuel consumption, and environmental impacts.
• Analyse environmental data and prepare reports for senior management and client submissions.
• Assist in delivering environmental objectives, targets, and sustainability programmes.
Operational Support
• Conduct site inspections and environmental assessments across operational locations.
• Support project teams in identifying environmental risks and implementing effective controls.
• Investigate environmental incidents, complaints, near misses, and non-conformances, identifying root causes and corrective actions.
• Provide practical environmental solutions to support operational delivery while maintaining compliance.
Stakeholder Engagement
• Build strong working relationships with operational teams, clients, regulators, and external agencies.
• Support environmental aspects of tenders, bids, and contract mobilisation activities.
• Promote environmental awareness and best practice throughout the business.
• Deliver environmental training, toolbox talks, communications, and awareness campaigns.
Sustainability & Continuous Improvement
• Support the delivery of Lanes Group's sustainability and ESG commitments.
• Identify opportunities for environmental improvement, innovation, and efficiency savings.
• Assist with environmental initiatives relating to energy, water, waste, biodiversity, and carbon reduction.
• Champion a positive environmental culture and encourage responsible behaviours across the organisation.
Required Skills & Experience
Essential
• Experience in an Environmental, Sustainability, HSEQ, or Compliance role.
• Strong understanding of environmental legislation and compliance requirements.
• Experience supporting environmental management systems, preferably ISO 14001.
• Experience conducting environmental audits, inspections, and investigations.
• Ability to analyse data and produce accurate reports and recommendations.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Excellent organisational and problem-solving abilities.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and reporting tools.
• Full UK Driving Licence and willingness to travel nationally.
Qualifications
• Degree, HND, or equivalent qualification in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Geography, Ecology, or a related discipline.
• IEMA Associate Membership (AIEMA) or above, or willingness to work towards professional membership.
Desirable Skills & Experience
• Experience within utilities, infrastructure, drainage, wastewater, construction, engineering, or operational services environments.
• Knowledge of carbon reporting, net zero strategies, ESOS, SECR, or sustainability reporting.
• Experience managing waste, resource management, pollution prevention, and environmental permits.
• Lead Auditor or Internal Auditor qualification.
• Membership of IEMA or similar professional body.
• Knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), climate resilience, and environmental risk management.
• Experience supporting environmental aspects of client tenders and contract submissions.
