About this role

Description: Directs, supervises and manages the facilities/maintenance department and its personnel, assuring the safe and efficient operation of the school district's plant, buildings, facilities, equipment, and grounds. FACILITIES/ MAINTENANCE Essential Functions The Supervisor will: * Identify and take appropriate action in emergency situations to protect the safety of students, staff and property. * Recommend supplies and equipment for purchase. * Conduct regular inspections of the facilities and grounds. * Promote good safety practices and procedures. * Inspect roofs for leaks and repair. * Manage the federal asbestos program (AHERA). * Lead, manage, direct, and evaluate the department's personnel. * Manage the department's budget. * Work cooperatively with the district Athletic Department. * Direct the preparation of playing fields, grounds and facilities for athletics and other school activities. * Regulate heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season, and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water and electricity. * Ensure that the condition of the district's buildings, facilities and grounds are safe, clean, operational, and visually appealing so as to represent the district in a positive manner to stakeholders, visitors and prospective residents. Other Duties and Responsibilities * Maintain all safety and code requirements of the federal, state, and local board of education guidelines. * Instruct custodians and maintenance workers on proper methods of procedure, and proper use of tools. * Order and account for material and labor relative to assignments. * Conduct routine and periodic inspections of school and facilities as part of a preventative maintenance program. * Manage to the Negotiated Agreement. * Foster and maintain good public relations with the maintenance/custodial staff, building principals, students and parents. * Represent the school district in a positive and professional manner. * Represent the school district in a positive and professional manner. * Complete paperwork in a timely manner. • Coordinate work schedules of maintenance personnel, and work closely with building principals in developing work schedules of custodial personnel. • Coordinate vacation schedules for department personnel. • Obtain, contract for and supervise outside vendors for maintenance work. * Establish and recommend priorities for repair projects. * Confer with building principals when making plans for maintenance of buildings and grounds. * Confer with building principals regarding the establishment of regular preventative maintenance programs. * Administer a system for dealing with emergency repair problems in an efficient manner. * Manage a recycling program of scrap metal, light bulbs, cardboard, batteries, tires, oils, lubricants, and n o n - t e r r o u s m e t a l s . * Implement a preventative maintenance and replacement schedule for district-owned equipment. * Prepare and submit a monthly report to the Superintendent/CEO. * Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent/CEO. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Initiative and excellent judgement. * Possess specialized knowledge and capable of analyzing and solving complex problems. * Ability to maintain confidentiality. * Possess proficient knowledge of computer software programs and systems related to the efficient and effective operation of the department. * Ability to work effectively with others. * Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. * Ability to discuss specific problems with contractors to determine proper course of action. * Effective, active listening skills. * Organizational skills. * Training in the proper care and storage of chemicals, e.g., hazards communication training. * Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings, and labels. * Ability to read and understand blueprints. * Ability to operate machinery. * Training in OSHA/PERRP rules and regulations. * Manage the operation, inspection and repair of the following systems: * Security and Safety, HVAC, Boilers, Refrigeration, Electrical, Plumbing, Basic Construction, Welding * Ability to complete maintenance tasks on the wide range of building systems Equipment Operated * Pickup truck and van, Snow plow, Mowers and field liner, Welding tools, Carpentry tools, Electrical tools, meters and testing equipment, Drain cleaner, Table saw, Chain saw, Electric scissor lift, Various hand tools and power tools Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Effective communication skills including written, oral and active listening. * Organizational and problem solving skills. * Ability to manage and evaluate personnel. * Ability to manage resources. * Formal instruction in student transportation management (classroom instruction and field experience). * Basic understanding of the educational process and the corresponding role of pupil transportation. * Basic c o m p u t e r competency. * Knowledge of web-based information systems. * Knowledge of state and federal regulations applicable to the transportation of students and to the operation of student transportation vehicles. * Ability to implement and lead in-service programs. Equipment Operated * Computer/printer, Telephone/cellular phone, Two-way radio, Pickup truck and van, Hand tools, Power tools FACILITIES and MAINTENANCE Additional Working Conditions * Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue. * Occasional operation of a vehicle in inclement weather conditions, i.e., must be prepared to come to school on all scheduled work days including calamity days. * Occasional evening/weekend work. * Frequent travel between buildings and to get supplies. * Occasional repetitive hand motion, e.g., use of hand tools. * Frequent requirement to work near moving mechanical parts, e.g., drill press, circular saw, table saw, hand tools, pulleys, and pumps. * Occasional requirement to work in high places. * Occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, dangerous or caustic chemicals, e.g., welding fumes, sawdust, masonry dust, and pollens. * Occasional exposure to loud noises, e.g., power tools and power machinery. * Occasional lifting, pulling and pushing of up to 50 pounds. * Must be physically able to wear necessary personal protective equipment as necessary, e.g., respirator, hearing protection, safety glasses, and safety clothing. * Occasional requirement to travel. * Occasional requirement to work overtime. Qualifications * High school diploma (minimum requirement). Post-secondary education or industry certification desired. * It is highly desired that the successful candidate has experience in commercial/educational facilities management/maintenance and in pupil transportation. * Must hold a valid driver's license. * Prior supervisory/management experience desired. * Prior work experience in a school district or other educational environment desired. * Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate. * CDL with school transportation endorsement; Training and experience in the repair, maintenance and installation of HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems; Clear BCI/FBI background checks.
