Education: Degree in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or optometry. Optometry (OD). Work setting: Clinic. Private practice. Tasks: Advise on use and care of contact lenses. Examine patients' eyes, conduct tests and use specialized instruments to determine visual efficiency. Prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses and other vision aids to correct patients' vision. Prescribe treatment to conserve, improve and correct vision and other ocular disorders. Counsel patients on visual hygiene, lighting arrangements, working distances and safety factors. Supervise staff. Supervision: 5-10 people. Certificates, licences, memberships, and courses : Licensure by provincial or territorial authorities. Area of specialization: Correcting special vision problems. Obtain specifications for eyeglasses or contact lenses and fit clients with prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses.
