About this role

, Netherlands Worker Type: Interns (Fixed Term) (Trainee) Posting Start Date: August 7, 2026 Job Description:

Intern assignment

Project Title : Modelling Advances thermodynamic cycles utilising low-temperature heat sources Advanced thermodynamic cycles are being developed to utilize low-temperature heat sources for efficient energy generation and conversion. These cycles aim to improve the use of low-temperature resources, such as waste heat from industry and refrigeration plants, biomass, geothermal, and solar energy. The understanding and development of these cycles is expected to lead to innovative thermal systems for electricity generation, heat pumping, and cooling, with efficiencies that surpass current levels significantly. This internship project will focus on the routes for renewable power sources to an industrial process where thermodynamic cycle concept is relevant. The type of the renewable source (i.e. solar) and the industrial process (i.e. conversion to a low carbon product) can be decided based on the interests of the student (university program) and the ones of Shell. The intern will develop a conceptual model for different route for this integration, and for generation of products. The model can be developed using any suitable OpenSource library that uses python or any other programming language. There won't be any IP generated, so you will be free to publish your results and MSc thesis publicly.

Shell has a dedicated technical program on life cycle analysis (LCA) and techno-economical analysis (TEA) which supports R&D and business activities around industrial process engineering, business case development, market positioning and deployment analysis. We have our in-house and commercial tools (LCA/TEA) to support technical teams for design and implementation of integrated concepts and scale-ups, ie. Fischer-tropsch, green/blue hydrogen production, reactor engineering, catalyst development, sustainable aviation fuel production.

Deliverables: Final report/presentation MSc thesis
