ASSISTANT CAFETERIA MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Assistant Cafeteria Manager CONTRACT YEAR: 10-MONTH CONTRACT SALARY: SALARY COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE BASED ON FY2027 SALARY SCALE LOCATION: BRUNSWICK HIGH SCHOOL/J.S. RUSSELL MIDDLE SCHOOL START DATE: AUGUST 1, 2026 (Open Until Filled) Job Description: The candidate for this position will assist the Cafeteria Manager with planning, organizing, and overseeing the daily operation of the school cafeteria. Participates in preparing, cooking, and serving breakfast and lunch; provides work direction and training to assigned child nutrition personnel; maintains required records; and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local food safety and child nutrition requirements. Serves as the acting Cafeteria Manager in the manager's absence.
Direct Accountability and Reporting: Works under the supervision of the Cafeteria Manager and Supervisor of Child Nutrition. An annual evaluation will be based upon this job description, division and personal goals and objectives specific to the position, and the employee's performance. ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES Duties of the Assistant Cafeteria Manager include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Assists with planning, organizing, and overseeing the daily operation of the Brunswick High School cafeteria.
• Assists with preparing food according to established menus, recipes, portion sizes, quality standards, and quantity requirements.
• Cooks, bakes, assembles, and serves breakfast and lunch items while overseeing the preparation of other menu items as assigned.
• Ensures that meals are prepared and served on schedule and in accordance with established nutritional, quality, and presentation standards.
• Assists with taking inventory of food, beverages, supplies, materials, and equipment.
• Assists with estimating quantities and ordering food, supplies, and other necessary items.
• Sets up serving areas and ensures that serving lines are properly stocked, organized, and maintained.
• Serves food to students and staff in accordance with established procedures, portion-control requirements, and health and sanitation regulations.
• Maintains kitchen, preparation, storage, and serving areas in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition.
• Cleans and stores utensils, trays, food-preparation equipment, kitchen appliances, and other materials.
• Operates kitchen utensils, equipment, and appliances safely and properly.
• Provides work direction, guidance, and training to assigned child nutrition personnel and student workers, when applicable.
• Assists with prioritizing and assigning work to ensure the efficient completion of daily food service responsibilities.
• Trains staff on food preparation, meal service, sanitation, safety, recordkeeping, and other child nutrition procedures.
• Maintains accurate records and reports related to daily meal counts, production records, inventory, cash receipts, deposits, food temperatures, and other assigned activities.
• Operates computerized child nutrition management, point-of-sale, inventory, and recordkeeping systems.
• Collects payments, makes change, balances cash receipts, and prepares deposits in accordance with established procedures.
• Assists with monitoring compliance with federal and state school nutrition program requirements.
• Consults with the Cafeteria Manager and Supervisor of Child Nutrition regarding staffing, equipment, supplies, food quality, safety, and other cafeteria needs or concerns.
• Reports equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, food-quality concerns, shortages, and operational issues through established procedures.
• Participates in required meetings, training sessions, professional development activities, and division-sponsored programs.
• Substitutes for the Cafeteria Manager and assumes responsibility for cafeteria operations in the manager's absence.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Cafeteria Manager, Supervisor of Child Nutrition, Principal, Superintendent, or designee.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
• Must possess or obtain an approved Food Protection Manager Certification, such as ServSafe Manager, within the timeframe established by Brunswick County Public Schools.
• Must complete all required child nutrition, food safety, sanitation, and professional standards training.
• Must successfully complete all required background checks and employment screenings.
• A valid Virginia driver's license may be required if driving is necessary to perform assigned duties.
Experience:
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Experience in large-quantity food preparation, meal service, kitchen maintenance, or school food service required.
• Previous experience providing work direction or serving in a lead food service position preferred.
• Experience working in a school child nutrition program preferred.
Work Environment: Work is primarily performed in a school cafeteria and commercial kitchen environment. The employee may be exposed to hot foods, steam, cooking equipment, sharp utensils, cleaning chemicals, cold-storage areas, and slippery or wet surfaces. The position requires working in a fast-paced environment and may involve exposure to varying temperatures. Physical Demands and Hazards: Requires standing and walking for extended periods; bending, reaching, kneeling, and crouching; operating kitchen equipment; and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling items weighing up to 50 pounds. The employee may be exposed to hot surfaces, steam, sharp utensils, cleaning chemicals, wet surfaces, and other hazards commonly associated with a commercial kitchen.
