JOB DESCRIPTION Position Title: Crossing Guard Department: Safety and Crisis Management Reports To: Administrator of Safety and Crisis Management FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Employment Status: Hourly Contract Length: 185 Days ____________________________________________________________________ GENERAL SUMMARY The Crossing Guard is responsible for ensuring the safe crossing of students, staff, and pedestrians before and after school by directing pedestrian and vehicular traffic at designated crossing locations. This position promotes student safety while maintaining a positive and professional presence within the school community. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned.) Safely assist students and pedestrians in crossing streets at designated school crossings. Monitor and direct vehicular traffic during student arrival and dismissal. Stop traffic when necessary to allow pedestrians to cross safely. Promote safe pedestrian behaviors and reinforce school safety procedures. Observe and report unsafe traffic conditions, accidents, or hazards to the Administrator of Safety and Crisis Management. Communicate effectively with school personnel, law enforcement, parents, and the public. Maintain order at assigned crossing locations. Wear all required safety equipment while performing assigned duties. Attend required safety training and meetings. Comply with all district policies, procedures, and applicable laws. Perform other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of pedestrian and traffic safety practices. Ability to communicate effectively with children, staff, parents, and the public. Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergency situations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Dependable, punctual, and safety conscious. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma or GED preferred. Experience working with children, schools, public safety, or traffic control preferred. Successful completion of all district-required onboarding and criminal background screening. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Stand and walk for extended periods. Work outdoors in varying weather conditions. See and hear approaching traffic and pedestrians. Lift up to 25 pounds occasionally. React quickly during emergency situations. WORKING CONDITIONS The Crossing Guard works primarily outdoors before and after school in varying weather conditions and around moderate to heavy traffic. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT 185-Day Hourly Position. Non-Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Successful completion of all onboarding requirements and criminal background screening is required prior to employment. EVALUATION Performance will be evaluated annually by the Administrator of Safety and Crisis Management in accordance with Jasper County School District policies and procedures.
