Job Title: Grounds Equipment Specialist Department: Buildings and Grounds Reports To: Director of Buildings and Grounds Salary Guide: Non-Affiliate F; Twelve-month position Position Summary: The Grounds Equipment Specialist is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and supporting the District's grounds equipment, custodial equipment, departmental vehicles, and related buildings and grounds systems. The Grounds Equipment Specialist provides leadership and technical support for grounds operations, including equipment maintenance, athletic field support, landscaping contract oversight, snow removal, road and paving repairs, and related District-wide grounds responsibilities. The Grounds Equipment Specialist performs duties personally and may provide direction, guidance, and support to assigned staff. Qualifications: Minimum High School diploma or equivalent. Advanced mechanical aptitude required. Experience maintaining and repairing grounds equipment, custodial equipment, and departmental vehicles preferred. Experience maintaining a large fleet of trucks preferred. Experience supervising or leading five or more staff preferred. Experience with oversight of a landscaping contract across multiple buildings or locations preferred. Knowledge of grounds responsibilities, including fields, equipment, staffing, snow removal, road repairs, paving, pothole repair, concrete repair, and related grounds operations preferred. Experience with roof repairs, electrical repairs, carpentry repairs, and flooring removal and installation, including VCT, ceramic tile, and carpet, preferred. Ability to operate District equipment not requiring a CDL. In possession of a valid Black Seal Boiler Operator's license or higher, or must attain license within twelve months after date of hire, if required by the District. Required criminal history background check. Valid New Jersey driver's license is required. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Lead and provide guidance to maintenance, grounds, and assigned District staff as directed.
• Assist with oversight of District landscaping contract(s) and related vendor work.
• Maintain, inspect, troubleshoot, and repair the District vehicle fleet and related equipment.
• Repair and maintain custodial equipment, including shampooers, burnishers, and related cleaning equipment.
• Repair and maintain District grounds equipment, including lawn mowers, weed whackers, and related grounds tools and equipment.
• Lead District snow removal operations, including preparation, staffing support, equipment operation, shoveling, ice removal, and post-event follow-up.
• Remove and install flooring, including VCT, ceramic tile, carpet, and related materials.
• Complete road, paving, pothole, concrete, and related exterior repairs.
• Perform District roof repairs, electrical repairs, carpentry repairs, gutter repairs, and related buildings and grounds maintenance.
• Observe mechanical devices in operation and listen to their sounds to locate causes of trouble.
• Dismantle devices to gain access to and remove defective parts.
• Test and inspect engines using diagnostic instruments to determine malfunctions, locate missing or broken parts, and verify repairs.
• Perform routine engine maintenance, including lubricating parts and replacing spark plugs.
• Repair or replace defective parts, including magnetos, water pumps, gears, pistons, and carburetors, using hand tools.
• Test and inspect engines for malfunctioning parts.
• Perform light plumbing repairs, including problems with sinks, toilets, drains, and related systems.
• Perform masonry work ranging from minor repairs to full sidewalk areas.
• Maintain athletic fields and support grounds responsibilities involving fields, equipment, and staffing.
• Assist with the receipt or delivery of district-wide supplies as needed.
• Perform outside work, including grass cutting, weeding, pruning, trimming, snow removal, and related groundskeeping responsibilities.
• Perform other duties within the scope of the position as assigned by the Director of Buildings and Grounds or designee.
TECHNOLOGY SKILLS Ability to be proficient in computer applications pertinent to support the position, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, Google Suite, and Genesis Employee Portal. EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the New Jersey Administrative Code and Board of Education policy. PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, sit, move about, hear, speak and write. Ability to work using ladders, scaffolding, mechanical lifts and district vehicles. Ability to spend most of the work-day standing, lifting, walking, shoveling and scraping. Ability to lift up to 60 pounds and move heavier materials using appropriate equipment. Noise level may be high when operating power equipment. During these conditions, appropriate district provided personal protective equipment such as hearing protection must be worn and used in accordance with manufacturer's directions and district training. Employees may be required to work in restricted spaces to include crawling and/or climbing as working at heights. Required to stand, be on feet, and move around for a full work shift. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee is required to properly use such safety equipment as is appropriate to the work to prevent injury to self or others. Ability to communicate effectively in person, by radio, electronically and over the phone. Ability to use computer equipment to complete reports, generate service orders, maintain inventories, etc. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions, while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Shoveling snow, chipping ice and operating mechanical equipment in these conditions. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials or illnesses during the course of their duties.
