6th Grade Exploratory Spanish & 6th–8th Grade Advisory Teacher
Position Overview We are seeking an enthusiastic, versatile educator to join our middle school team in a dual-capacity role as a 6th Grade Exploratory Spanish Teacher and 6th–8th Grade Advisory Teacher. The ideal candidate thrives in early adolescent education, balancing a passion for language acquisition with a commitment to student advocacy, executive functioning, and social-emotional growth.
Key Responsibilities 1. 6th Grade Exploratory Spanish (Language Carousel)
• Teach 6th-grade Exploratory Spanish within our Language Carousel rotation, setting the stage for lifelong language learning by creating a dynamic, low-stakes environment filled with music, games, hands-on projects, and real-world connections.
• Foster curiosity, joyful engagement, and early communicative confidence by providing immersive, interactive experiences with high-frequency vocabulary, functional everyday phrases, and vibrant cultural practices from Spanish-speaking countries.
• Help introduce students to world languages and cultures prior to selecting their primary language pathway in the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).
2. 6th–8th Grade Advisory
• Facilitate structured SEL lessons utilizing the CharacterStrong curriculum to foster character development, empathy, relational skills, and digital citizenship.
• Executive Functioning & Study Habits: Explicitly teach fundamental organizational skills, binder/digital workspace management, note-taking strategies, and time management.
• College, Career & Library Integration: In collaboration with the Guidance Counselors, you will guide students through age-appropriate college and career exploration lessons and partner with the media specialist to deliver essential library and research skills.
• Student Advocacy & Culture: Serve as a primary mentor and advocate for advisory students; build an inclusive, supportive classroom community; and monitor holistic student well-being.
3. Professional & School Community Engagement
• Communicate regularly with families regarding both academic progress in Spanish and overall social-emotional development in advisory.
• Collaborate with grade-level teams, Department Leader, IB MYP coordinators, language department colleagues, and student support staff.
• Participate in school-wide events, team planning meetings, and professional development opportunities.
Qualifications & Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Education related field and/or Spanish
• Valid State Teaching Certification appropriate for Middle School Spanish / World Languages preferred
• Spanish Language Proficiency & Fluency
• Experience & Skills:
• Demonstrated skill in engaging 6th–8th-grade learners using communicative, student-centered methodologies.
• Familiarity with social-emotional learning frameworks (experience with CharacterStrong or IB MYP framework is a plus).
• Exceptional classroom management, organizational, and relationship-building abilities.
