Role and Reporting Structure
Build and continuously improve Berry Law's legal quality management system to ensure appeals submitted to the VA are legally accurate, factually supported, professionally written, strategically persuasive, and consistently reflect the firm's standards of excellence. The Director of Legal Quality is responsible for reporting defects, identifying systemic quality issues, improving attorney performance through writing skills training, and ensuring Berry Law produces the highest-quality veterans disability advocacy in the country. The Director of Legal Quality reports to the VA Commander and does not have any direct reports.
Qualifications
Required
• Licensed attorney
• 5+ years appellate or litigation experience
• Exceptional legal writing ability
• Extensive VA appellate experience
• Strong analytical skills
• Excellent judgment
Preferred
• Former appellate clerk
• Former law review editor
• Former legal writing professor
• Experience implementing quality management systems
Responsibilities
Quality Assurance
• Conduct independent quality reviews of randomly selected appeals
• Review all appeals from new attorneys for the first 15 days after they graduate from the training platoon.
• Ensure compliance with Berry Law's Quality Standards.
• Prevent critical defects before filing.
Quality Improvement
Analyze every defect found during audits. Determine whether the root cause is:
• knowledge
• workflow
• template
• training
• AI
• supervision
Report defect to the VA commander for corrective actions.
Attorney Development
Conduct Quarterly:
• legal writing workshops
• appellate advocacy training
• calibration exercises
Quality Systems
Maintain:
• QC Standards
• QC Scorecards
• Defect Database
• Writing Guides with Examples
• Approved Authority Library
• Template Library
• AI Prompt Library (FUTURE)
• Review and report on precedential cases and update the above as necessary
Legal Writing Excellence
Ensure Berry Law writing is:
• concise
• accurate
• persuasive
• professional
• easy to read
• strategically organized
Defect Analysis
Every significant defect receives:
• root cause
• corrective action
• owner
• deadline to fix (when feasible to fix)
• a report to VA Commander and assigned Platoon Leader
Quality Analytics
Maintain dashboards showing:
• defect rates
• recurring defects
• attorney trends
• department trends
• quality improvement over time
Quality Audits
Conduct weekly audits of:
• appeals
• appeal forms
Conduct monthly audits of:
• templates
• AI output
• SOP compliance
Authority
The Director of Legal Quality has authority to:
• Require Platoon Leader review before filing.
• Place attorneys on enhanced QC review.
• Update templates and checklists after consulting with VA Commander.
• Recommend changes to training.
• Escalate recurring quality issues to CEO.
• Recommend attorney and case manager termination directly to the VA Commander.
Quality Control Position Metrics
• Appeals audited
• Number / % of audited appeals not meeting quality standards
