About the role | Mō te tūranga: We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Coagulation Technical Lead to join our Haematology Department at the Dunedin Laboratory. This is a permanent, full-time position of 80 hours per fortnight within a high-performing team. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist who is passionate about delivering high-quality diagnostic service and providing technical leadership in coagulation.

The successful applicant will be the technical lead for routine and specialist coagulation testing while also contributing to all areas of the Haematology Laboratory. This role includes participation in the Haematology roster and requires a strong commitment to quality, continuous improvement and supporting the development of colleagues.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide technical leadership and expertise in routine and specialist coagulation testing.

• Perform, interpret and report coagulation investigations in accordance with laboratory protocols and best practice.

• Read and report peripheral blood films with high level of accuracy and confidence.

• Ability to prioritise and multi-task.

• Participate in the Haematology roster, working across all areas of the department.

• Support quality management activities, including method validation, quality assurance, troubleshooting and continuous improvement initiatives.

• Assist with staff training, competency assessments and the implementation of new technologies and procedures.

• Work collaboratively with Pathologists, Clinicians and laboratory colleagues to deliver an efficient and high-quality diagnostic service.

About you | He kōrero mōu To be successful in this role you need to have:

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in routine and specialist coagulation testing and haematology blood film morphology.

• Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with a current Annual Practising Certificate.

• Experience in flow cytometry would be an advantage.

• Previous experience in a technical lead or senior scientist role is desirable.

• Strong commitment to accuracy, efficiency, attention to detail and high-quality results.

• Skilled in workflow prioritisation and working collaboratively in a team environment.

• Experience supporting or mentoring junior laboratory staff.

• Familiarity with quality assurance systems and a proactive approach to continuous improvement.

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to provide technical and scientific advice.

• The ability to work in a methodical manner adhering to strict quality procedure guidelines.

• Committed to health and safety compliance and maintaining a clean, safe work environment.

• Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
