Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and experienced Biomedical Scientist to join our busy Specialist Chemistry Department at BCPS.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Biomedical Scientist (AfC band 6) with a minimum of 3 years' experience as a HCPC registered BMS and hold the specialist portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent. Suitable candidates would have expertise in a range of analytical skills and troubleshooting experience, for example, HPLC, GCMS, ICP-MS, LCMS/MS and Eliza.
Consideration will be given to candidates suitable for a Trainee Biomedical Scientist position. All potential candidates must have a BSc Biomedical Science degree or equivalent, have a formal letter from the IBMS confirming status of the degree and detailing training requirements together with a minimum of 6 months clinical laboratory experience.
Whilst initially based on either the Sandwell or City Health Campus sites, this role will require working across both sites.
Candidates should ensure they meet the requirements of the person specification and that their application demonstrates how this is achieved. Key skills include good analytical and organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure.
Main duties of the job
As a State Registered Biomedical Scientist, to carry out analysis and technical investigations of clinical samples in one of the specialist disciplines of Pathology.
To undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated analysis of all specimens.
To interpret and validate analytical results, ensuring accuracy and precision.
To provide approved departmental information and advice to other healthcare professionals, patients and the public and to refer on to appropriate specialists requests for information outside their area of responsibility.
To carry out diagnostic analytical work in all sections of the specialist laboratory and to advise senior staff of performance or procedures affecting quality control.
To adhere at all times to the department's Standard Operating Procedures for carrying out analyses and to make recommendations for changes.
To develop and maintain skills and knowledge appropriate to the BMS1 grade in order to benefit patient outcomes and treatment.
To undertake routine maintenance of highly complex analytical equipment as specified in SOPs and to report any faults to a supervisor immediately.
To maintain laboratory supplies and adhere to written procedures for stock management. To use resources efficiently.
To undertake general laboratory housekeeping as specified in SOPs.
For short periods of time, the post holder may be required to deputise for the section supervisor.

Reception, data entry and preparation of samples of blood, urine, faeces and other samples ready for analysis.
To effectively monitor the quality of samples arriving in the laboratory.
To prepare, store and use chemical reagents required for laboratory investigations.
To undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated analysis of all specimens.
To interpret and validate analytical results, ensuring accuracy and precision, order relevant follow up laboratory procedures, add technical and predefined clinically relevant comments, refer results for expert opinion and inform requestor of clinically significant results.

To ensure the correct quality control procedures are applied.
To take part in all internal and external quality control/assurance procedures, measuring and monitoring accuracy and imprecision of laboratory investigations.

To undertake specialist technical investigations within the discipline.
To undertake analysis of specimens which carry a high infective risk.

To undertake preliminary fault finding and corrective action when quality control procedures indicate loss of performance and to minimise equipment down time.
To carry out first line equipment and method troubleshooting, to advise supervisor of situations requiring further action and work with service engineers to resolve faults.
To undertake method and equipment evaluation as directed by supervisor.
To maintain laboratory supplies and adhere to written procedures for stock management. To use resources efficiently.
To ensure records are kept up to date and stored safely.
To comply with local and national policies for safe, secure and confidential processing and storage of patient and other laboratory information.
To participate in the training, mentoring and professional supervision of Trainee BMS's, Medical Laboratory Assistants and BSc students in the procedures for which the post holder is responsible.
To participate in research and development and clinical audit when required and present the findings to a wide clinical audience to facilitate change and improve patient care.
To participate in review of policies and procedures, COSHH and work place risk assessments.
To participate in staff rotas, highlighting any deficiencies and communicating effectively with all staff members to enable all duties to be performed accurately and effectively and to promote good team work.

Qualifications Essential

Experience/Skill Essential
Laboratory experience Experience of working with scientific instruments and analysers, and undertaking complex biomedical analysis using either manual or automated techniques.
Desirable
Substantial (post HCPC registration) laboratory experience. Preferably a recognised specialist laboratory. Experience of producing, contributing or updating SOP's. Experience of performing sample preparation that requires repetitive tasks carried out at speed and with accuracy. For example manual extraction.
Communication Skills Essential
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Written skill demonstrable by lack of typographical errors, correct use of capitals and punctuation.
