About Lihir Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your Impact As a Structural Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and long-term integrity of mining infrastructure. Working on a diverse portfolio of structural remediation, maintenance, and capital project initiatives, you will provide expert engineering solutions that support safe production and sustainable operational excellence. Your work will directly influence the performance, compliance, and resilience of key infrastructure across site operations. This is a two-year fixed term contract.
As part of our team, you will
• Develop and review structural designs, engineering calculations, and technical plans for mining infrastructure and associated facilities. • Conduct inspections, condition assessments, and risk evaluations to identify structural issues and recommend practical remediation solutions. • Support the delivery of capital and infrastructure projects from concept through to execution, ensuring designs meet operational requirements and industry standards. • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including engineering, geology, operations, and project stakeholders to deliver safe and effective outcomes. • Provide technical guidance during construction and installation activities, ensuring structural works are completed in accordance with approved designs and specifications. • Maintain accurate engineering documentation, reports, inspection records, and design data to support informed decision-making and future planning. • Champion a strong safety culture by identifying risks, implementing controls, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
Prerequisites for your success in this role
• Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or a related engineering discipline. • Demonstrated experience in structural engineering, infrastructure maintenance, remediation, or capital project delivery within mining, heavy industry, resources, or a comparable operational environment. • Strong knowledge of structural design principles, engineering calculations, risk assessments, and applicable industry standards and regulations. • Proven ability to analyse complex technical problems and develop practical, fit-for-purpose engineering solutions. • Experience conducting structural inspections, condition assessments, and recommending improvement initiatives. • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across diverse teams. • A collaborative mindset, strong self-awareness, and a commitment to continuous improvement and safe work practices. • Experience in structural remediation projects will be highly regarded.
Your work environment This role is offered on a 21:21 Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster to Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea. Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.
