About this role

Health Systems Advisor

Project Description: Apply your program management skills to transform a West African hospital into the leading maternal and neonatal health facility.

Following the Ebola epidemic in 2014, Partners In Health - Sierra Leone (PIH-SL) has supported the Government of Sierra Leone to rebuild a resilient health system. In partnership with the Ministry of Health (MOH), PIH-SL supports 11 health facilities across eight of the country’s 16 districts. PIH-SL would like to transform one of its health facilities, Koidu Government Hospital, into a leading hospital for maternal and neonatal care, training, and research. By expanding the capacity of the hospital, PIH-SL will improve women’s health in West Africa and train the next generation of healthcare workers. To facilitate this expansion successfully, the team requires program management guidance for immediate operational needs as well as long-term skill development.

As a Health Systems Advisor, you will collaborate with the PIH-SL team to support the hospital’s operational plans and the team’s program management training. Your collective efforts will result in a premier health center that employs evidence-based services to improve maternal and child mortality rates.

Required Skills: Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, marketing, or public health. AND Two or more years of experience with social behavior change communications and project management.

Living Conditions: The Volunteer will live in a private quarter within a housing facility in the Kono District. The housing facility offers electricity, running water, a shared kitchen, and a security guard. Breakfast and dinner are served daily at the housing facility. Frequent work-related travel is expected between Freetown and Kono, and any travel outside of the duty station will be covered by the partner. The Volunteer will take public transit to and from work each day, often a mini-bus or a kekeh (a three-wheeled vehicle).

Activities: Provide program management support to the hospital’s expansion and operational plan.

Serve as a liaison between PIH-SL and Koidu Government Hospital department leads to align strategies and priorities.

Support logistics and visits from high-level donors, partners, and government officials.

Identify opportunities to improve patient experience, follow-up, and continuity of care.

Create and conduct training for an integrated social support program for use by 120+ community health workers.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as local health outreach trips and supporting PIH-SL leadership in additional duties as assigned.

Training: After a two-week orientation on topics such as health and safety, you will move to an urban community where you will collaborate with the PIH-SL staff to assess operational needs and develop a holistic health system that meets the community’s priorities.

Peace Corps/Sierra Leone will equip you with Krio language resources and you may work with a tutor who can help you build basic language skills to connect with the community.

Job Highlights: Apply your program management skills to make a positive impact on maternal and child health in Sierra Leone.

Learn Krio through daily interactions and dedicated tutoring.

Enjoy living in a multi-cultural environment while building lasting connections with community members.
