About this role
Position Summary: The Part-Time Car Driver is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, educational programs, and other approved locations using a school division-owned passenger vehicle. The driver ensures the safety and well-being of students while maintaining compliance with all Virginia laws, School Board policies, and division transportation procedures. Job Type: Part-Time, Non-Exempt Contract: Part-Time / As Needed FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Minimum Qualifications:
• Minimum of 21 years of age.
• Valid Virginia driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to obtain and maintain any required certifications, background clearances, and medical documentation required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and Middlesex County Public Schools.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, and the public.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
Essential Functions:
• Safely transport students to and from school, alternative education programs, field trips, work-based learning sites, medical appointments (when approved), and other authorized destinations.
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly vehicle at all times.
• Follow established transportation routes, schedules, and procedures while adjusting as directed by the Transportation Supervisor.
• Ensure students are safely loaded, secured (when applicable), and unloaded at designated locations.
• Maintain appropriate student behavior during transportation and report disciplinary concerns through established procedures.
• Complete required logs, mileage reports, inspection forms, and other documentation accurately and on time.
• Maintain communication with school administrators, transportation staff, and parents as appropriate regarding schedule changes or transportation concerns.
• Comply with all federal, state, and local laws, School Board policies, and transportation regulations.
• Attend required safety meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor or designee.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of safe driving practices and Virginia traffic laws.
• Knowledge of student transportation safety procedures.
• Ability to operate a passenger vehicle safely under varying weather and road conditions.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, school personnel, and the public.
• Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and complete required reports.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills.
Special Requirements:
• Successfully complete criminal history and child protective services background checks.
• Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination and any required drug and alcohol testing in accordance with School Board policy.
• Maintain a satisfactory driving record throughout employment.
• Complete required annual training and any state-mandated certifications.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule based on student transportation needs.
Education and Experience:
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Previous experience transporting students or passengers is preferred but not required.
• Safe driving experience with an excellent driving record is required.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to sit for extended periods while operating a vehicle.
• Ability to enter and exit the vehicle frequently.
• Ability to assist students entering and exiting the vehicle, including lifting or supporting mobility equipment when necessary.
• Ability to bend, reach, stoop, climb, and perform repetitive movements.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to safely perform duties in varying weather conditions.
