About this role
The purpose of this job is to assist hearing-impaired students through the use of sign language. Duties and responsibilities include interpreting, tutoring students, and assisting teachers in general classroom and clerical duties. QUALIFICATIONS
• High School Diploma
• Ability to use and interpret Sign language
• Dependable transportation to various sites
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES
• Interpret information accurately, conveying the thought, intent, and spirit of the sender in a manner appropriate to the student's communication level. Transliterate/interpret lectures, discussions, tests, films, assemblies, and student comment in all communication settings
• Position self in place that provides the best distance, lighting, background, and angle for the student viewing of teacher, media, and interpreter
• Ask teacher for an overview of the coming week's work to become familiar with content and technical vocabulary
• Direct student's questions to the teacher and the teacher's questions to the students
• Interpret the communication and interaction between all students as appropriate
• Interpret for students, parents, and other professionals at conferences, IEP meetings, and other school sponsored activities as authorized and appropriate
• Understand the student's hearing loss and the effect of this loss on speech, language, and cognitive development; apply that knowledge when functioning as a tutor or assistant
• Keep confidential all private conversations between and with the school staff and the students(s) concerning family or personal problems, grades, etc.
• Is able to merge personal behaviors with the classroom team. Is knowledgeable of methods of behavior management being used in the classroom and understands her/his role in those procedures
• Participate as a member of the IEP Team when asked
• Responsible for explaining technical assistance needs for interpreting, i.e., lighting, visual aids, positioning, time, length, and difficulties in changing modes of communication in conjunction with the Hearing Specialist
• Responsible for instructing the student, staff, and parents about how to use an interpreter in conjunction with the Hearing Specialist
• Function in a professional manner appropriate to the situation
• Dress appropriately for the profession
• Encourage independence in students and avoids development of inappropriate dependence in the student-interpreter relationship
• Attend all staff meetings as directed
• Promote positive public relations among the deaf, hearing peers, staff, and faculty members · Establish and maintain satisfactory, respectful working relationships within the school environment
• Perform other duties as assigned
