Santiam Canyon School District is seeking a passionate and student-centered Secondary Social Studies Teacher to join the team at Santiam Junior/Senior High School. The successful candidate will create engaging, standards-based learning experiences that foster critical thinking, civic responsibility, historical inquiry, and an understanding of geography, economics, and government. The teacher will build positive relationships with students, collaborate with colleagues, and contribute to a school culture focused on academic excellence and student success. Reports to: Building Principal ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned.
• Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policies and procedures.
• Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to e?ective learning.
• Plans a program of study that meets the Oregon required learning standards and the individual needs, interests and abilities of students.
• Plans and supervises purposeful and engaging lessons and experiences.
• Assists in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials
• Match activities and materials to individual and group skills and needs.
• Uses a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
• Uses a grading system that is consistent, fair, and supportable.
• Assesses and evaluates students' abilities and progress.
• Prepares report cards and progress reports.
• Informs parents of student progress concerning academic achievement and behavior through phone calls, email, and occasional in person meetings throughout the school year.
• Facilitates conferences with students and parents.
• Completes required paperwork in specified time and manner.
• Conducts appropriate assessments of students' work and maintains accurate and regular data on students in areas of attendance, grades and IEP progress, if applicable.
• Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
• Assists administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
• Informs parents of student progress concerning academic achievement and behavior through conferences, written messages, telephone calls and/or email.
• Promptly reports any serious accident or illness affecting students in the teacher's charge or any incident, which might a?ect the school, teachers or students therein.
• Attend all required meetings.
• Appropriately maintains and secures confidential records and inquiries.
• Maintains appropriate certi?cations and training hours as required.
• Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff and students.
• Complies with applicable District, state, local and federals laws, rules and regulations.
• Adheres to all standards established by Teachers Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) for Competent and Ethical Educator.
• Attends work regularly and is punctual.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent from four-year college or university required;
• Master's degree or equivalent strongly preferred;
• Experience teaching Social Studies at the secondary level preferred;
• Ability to teach or obtain qualifications to teach dual credit courses through a partnering college or university preferred;
• Must have a valid teacher's license and appropriate science endorsement(s) through the Teachers Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) or have an ability to obtain the needed endorsements prior to employment.
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of board policy.
