About this role

Beginning Teacher Mentor (10 month) Summary Mentor teachers will support and guide 1st, 2nd and 3rd year beginning teachers to ensure a successful transition into the teaching profession. The role of the mentor teacher is confidential, strictly supportive, and non-evaluative. Required education, training, and experience

• Valid North Carolina Teaching License

• Expertise in classroom management and instructional skills

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• Ability to plan and evaluate strategies for improving instruction

• Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with others

• Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship as necessitated by the work assignment

• Mentor teachers must be rated at least at the “proficient” level on the North Carolina Educator Effectiveness System (NCEES). For the purposes of this policy, “proficient” means a teacher has received ratings of proficient or higher on all five standards on the most recent summative evaluation, or on Standards 1 and 4 for teachers on an Abbreviated Evaluation. Priority consideration will be given to those teachers rated as "distinguished" and "accomplished."

• Retired teachers are eligible to serve as mentors.

• Mentor Teachers without evaluation data for two or more consecutive years shall not be eligible to serve as mentor teachers unless the mentor is a retired teacher.

Essential duties and responsibilities

• Responsible for providing instructional and emotional support for beginning teachers (1st, 2nd and 3rd year)

• Assist beginning teachers in developing and modeling lesson plans

• Conduct observations, provide non-evaluative feedback, and identify areas for improvement

• Collaborate with School Administrators and Beginning Teacher Coordinator to coordinate professional development program for beginning teachers

• Assist in the development, organization, and collection of Beginning Teacher paperwork

• Provide documentation of mentor activities to the Beginning Teacher Coordinator

• Attend meetings and conferences pertinent to the goals of the mentoring program
