For more information contact: Dan Shamblen at [email protected] Title: EC Teacher Assistant: Language Facilitator Reports to: EC Director Terms of Employment: 10 Months Salary: Pay Grade AIDE8HRLY55 GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB Under the direction of the Director of Programs for Exceptional Children and D/HH Teacher, the EC Language Facilitator will provide high-level communication access and behavioral support for a student with an identified hearing impairment. The language facilitator's role is not one of an interpreter but rather the individual who makes it possible for the child who is deaf or hard of hearing to access the activities of the program and encourages appropriate interaction with peers. The facilitator takes directions and cues from the teacher and child, communicates using language appropriate for the child and must clarify aspects of the child's surroundings (i.e., routines, rules, and concepts). The facilitator assists staff and peers in developing appropriate communication strategies with the child. That person rewords or paraphrases instructions, stories told aloud and other spoken language of the teachers and classmates. The language facilitator will also utilize positive reinforcements and redirection techniques when the student becomes distracted by internal compulsions or external stimuli, apply district-approved de-escalation strategies to manage frustration as well as maintain a sensitive, non-judgemental approach to the student's compulsive behaviors to assist in transitioning back to academic tasks. The language facilitator works under the guidance of the DHH teacher, classroom teachers, and administrators to implement individualized strategies to help maintain an open learning environment where the student has the opportunity for successful expressive and receptive communication within the learning environment. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Knowledge of basic operations of FM equipment, hearing aids, cochlear implants/speech processors, and other technology used with Deaf/Hard of Hearing students.
• Work one-on-one with student showing, explaining or helping student to understand language/vocabulary needed for assignments or an activity.
• Maintain confidentiality between self, students, and all other persons involved in the student's education.
• As directed by the Teacher for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, assist the student in academic and communication skills in areas outlined in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
• Assist in implementing student's IEP language, audition, management of hearing loss goals in the general education classroom.
• Assist with curriculum accommodations/modifications when appropriate.
• Explain/paraphrase teacher instructions or comments.
• Expand what the student says to model more complex language.
• Explain what the student has said to staff and students when necessary.
• Clarify/rephrase/explain what peers say to student. Help increase peer interaction.
• Use a variety of communication to help with communication between the student, peers and staff.
• Work with student, peers and teachers on strategies for interactive communication, and life skills independent of language facilitator.
• Participate in team meetings with classroom teacher, EC teachers and parents as needed or requested.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
• Minimum of a high school diploma
• Fluency in spoken English to support child's needs
• Experience working with children
• Knowledge and understanding of child development and language development
• Ability to adapt information, language and curriculum to individual learning style
• Ability to work as a collaborative team member
• Creative, energetic, flexible and patient
• Knowledgeable of behavior management or willingness to be trained
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
