POSITION: CTE Career Exploration Instructor LOCATION: Thompson Middle School REPORTS TO: Principal and/or Assistant Principal of Thompson Middle School SCHOOL YEAR: 2026/2027
JOB DESCRIPTION: To develop in each student an awareness and understanding coupled with the basic skills and knowledge applicable to exploration of careers within the modern work force and to instill in each student safe working habits, the importance of continuation of their education and the assets of reliability, competence, loyalty, and dependability. EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
• Hold or be currently eligible for a valid RI Career and Technical Education in
Computer Technology, and/or Electronic Technology. Candidates who do not currently hold a RI CTE certification, Secondary Math or Science RI certification may be considered along with experience in the field.
• Be a skilled and proficient user of Microsoft Office Suite, be fluent in HTML and CSS, be familiar with the basics of computer architecture, have fundamental to intermediate programming skills, be prepared to teach curriculum in line with the position and be willing to continue to learn, as the field is continuously changing.
• The ability to use technology to enhance teaching and learning is critical to this position;
• Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by course work, educational experience, school-level involvement and/or professional activities, and the interview process.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• To develop in each student an awareness and understanding coupled with the basic skills and knowledge applicable to the modern workforce—to include critical thinking, collaboration, and project management—through hands-on projects.
• Develops and carries out group and individualized instruction which will provide students with entry-level occupational skills for careers within the modern work force
• Establishes a student-centered classroom/work environment and maintains current
progress reports for all students;
• Troubleshoot a wide variety of technical issues within the classroom; including
hardware and software.
• Develops and maintains an inventory control system for all training equipment and
supplies, such as toner, bulbs, software, textbooks, etc. Maintains stock control and reorders supplies as necessary;
• Works with the District Technology Department to develop a regular preventive
maintenances schedule, including equipment replacement when necessary;
• Plans and supervises the work of students in the lab and classroom;
• Tests, evaluates and documents the achievement of students.
• Maintains an auditable record of student attendance and makes daily reports
of students absent each period;
• Maintains and updates the curriculum annually to current Information and CTE RI standards
• Maintains standards of student conduct needed to provide an orderly, safe, and
productive environment in an active classroom.
• Provide students with the opportunity to learn about various computer peripherals
and software applications.
• Maintains contact with the Information Technology instructor at Rogers High School
to keep informed of new innovations and job requirements..
• Participates in advisory committees, faculty committees, students' activities, and
organizations that enhance career and technical education;
• Implements career and technical academic integration in all curriculum areas;
• Performs all other duties as assigned by the Principal and or Assistant Principal of Thompson Middle School
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten-month position; appropriate salary/benefits in accordance with the Teachers' Contract. Evaluation in accordance with the process as established by the Rhode Island Department of Education for certified educators. Applicants are not to approach members of the Newport School Committee.
