About this role

Job Goal(s): The overall goal of the Program Assistant for the SXI Program is to assist the classroom teacher in implementing the instructional program while providing the medical, personal, and behavioral support necessary to meet the individual needs of each student assigned to the classroom Location of Work: Bert Goens Learning Center 705 South Paw Paw Street Lawrence, MI 49064 Minimum Qualifications: Education: High School diploma required Associates degree or completion of two years' college equal to 60 semester hours is preferred. Work Experience: Two years' experience as a program assistant or specialized training (CPI/TCI) or working with students will intense medical needs preferred; Skills:

• Ability to work with students on the autism spectrum

• Ability to work with students with low ability and deficits in language/ comprehension, daily living skills, mobility and all academic areas

• Ability to implement consistent and proactive classroom management/medical skills as directed by classroom teacher

• Possess good communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills

• Ability to work as a member of a team providing a coordinated and consistent personal care needs for students

• Ability to maintain open communication channels with teachers and staff to keep them informed of students academics and medical needs

• Willingness to take directions and follow-through with teacher and team decisions

Essential Job Functions:

• Demonstrate care, compassion, and professionalism in working with students, families, and staff.

• Support classroom instruction by following teacher direction and implementing lesson plans.

• Assist with classroom organization, preparation, instructional and medical activities

• Implement behavior support strategies and assist with data collection.

• Monitor and document student progress as directed.

• Assist students with personal care, mobility, medical, feeding, and other daily living needs.

• Collaborate and communicate effectively with staff

• Safely supervise and transport students to scheduled activities.

• Attend required meetings, trainings, and Learning Center events.

• Maintain confidentiality, dependable attendance, and punctuality.

• Follow Van Buren ISD policies, procedures, and safety expectations.

• Complete assigned duties and other responsibilities as directed by the Learning Center Principal.

General Responsibilities:

• Lead by example using VBISD guiding principles: Respect, Integrity, Compassion, and Excellence.

• Adhere to policies and procedures of the Van Buren ISD

• Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon time lines.

• Perform additional tasks, responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Principal, Director of Special Education and the Superintendent.
