About this role

Job summary

The Practice Business Manager is responsible for the strategic leadership, business management and corporate governance of the practice, ensuring the organisation is financially sustainable, operationally resilient and delivers safe, effective, high-quality primary care services.

Working alongside the GP Partners, Finance & Contracts Manager and Operations Manager, the post holder will provide visible leadership across the organisation, ensuring the practice remains compliant with all statutory and contractual requirements whilst delivering excellent patient care and maintaining financial stability.

The role provides strategic oversight of organisational performance, workforce planning, governance, estates, digital transformation, business development and organisational change. The Practice Business Manager will represent the practice at a senior level with external organisations and develop collaborative relationships that support the long-term success of the organisation.

The Practice Business Manager is expected to exercise significant autonomy, influence organisational direction and provide expert advice to the GP Partners on all non-clinical aspects of the business.

Main duties of the job

The role will include:

Leading the development and delivery of the practice strategy, supporting innovation, service improvement and sustainable growth. Ensuring strong governance, regulatory compliance and effective risk management, including preparation for CQC inspections and external reviews. Providing financial leadership alongside the Finance & Contracts Manager, ensuring robust financial controls, value for money and sustainable investment decisions. Leading workforce planning, organisational development and the creation of a positive, inclusive and high-performing culture. Driving performance improvement through effective use of data, KPIs and quality improvement approaches. Identifying opportunities for service development, partnership working and collaboration across the wider healthcare system. Leading digital transformation and ensuring effective use of technology to improve patient care and organisational efficiency. Overseeing estates, facilities and business continuity arrangements to ensure a safe and effective working environment. Developing strong relationships with external partners including the ICB, PCN, NHS organisations, commissioners and community providers. Providing visible, compassionate leadership to the wider practice team, supporting managers and staff to achieve excellence

About us

Due to retirement this is an exciting opportunity to join a well-established, high-performing GP practice serving around 19,000 patients in purpose-built building in Watford as the full time (on site) Practice Manager.

We are close to Watford town centre with excellent links to the M1, M25 and the surrounding area. We are within walking distance of Watford Junction station and Watford on the Metropolitan line. We have secure parking on site for staff.

We are a high achieving QOF/ECF practice, ambitious and committed to delivering excellent patient care while creating a supportive and enjoyable place to work.

You'll work alongside experienced GP Partners, a dedicated Finance & Contracts Manager and a committed multidisciplinary team including salaried GPs, Nurses, healthcare assistants, Clinical Pharmacists, Physician Associates, a First Contact Physiotherapist and a Care Coordinator.

We have an experienced Operations Manager and a professional administrative team including Patient Triage Advisors, Secretaries, a Practice Administrator and a data team.

We have a dedicated Enhanced Service, Meadowell, providing primary care services for those experiencing homelessness. We have a dedicated team supporting this cohort with patient centred care. Within this service we have a GP with a Part3 qualification and a Drug and Alcohol support worker.

Experience Essential

Experience Essential Significant senior management experience leading teams and services within a complex organisation. Experience of developing and delivering organisational strategy and business plans. Experience of leading multidisciplinary teams through organisational change and service improvement. Experience of financial planning, budgeting and resource management. Experience of workforce planning, recruitment, employee engagement and performance management. Experience of developing high-performing teams and fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. Experience of governance, compliance and organisational risk management within a regulated environment. Experience of analysing and interpreting performance data to inform decision-making and improve organisational performance. Experience of successfully leading projects from concept through to implementation and evaluation. Experience of building effective relationships with senior stakeholders, customers, regulators or partner organisations. Experience of working within a large private sector, public sector, healthcare or blue-chip organisation where quality, customer service and performance are key drivers.

Desirable

Desirable Experience within General Practice, Primary Care or the wider NHS. Experience of preparing for or leading regulatory inspections (e.g. CQC or equivalent regulatory bodies). Experience of estates or facilities management. Experience of procurement, commissioning or contract management. Experience of business case development Experience of working within partnership or membership-based organisations
