About this role

Job summary

The Trust is seeking an experiencedConsultant Gastroenterologist with a Specialist Interest in Bowel Cancer Screening Programmeand EMR polypectomy who will be based atBasildon University Hospital, with cross-site working across Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust as required.

The post holder will work closely with colorectal surgery, oncology, radiology, anaesthetics, and specialist nursing teams, contributing to multidisciplinary team meetings (colorectal and complex Polyp MDTs) and supporting streamlined patient pathways.

The consultant will also play a role ineducation and training, supporting endoscopy training where appropriate, supervising gastroenterology trainees and endoscopy staff, and contributing to departmental teaching programmes.

The role includes active participation inclinical governance, audit, quality improvement, appraisal, and revalidation, with an expectation of professional leadership, innovation, and commitment to delivering excellent patient-centred care in line with the values of Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

This post will also support Outpatient transformation and Gastroenterology and Endoscopy recovery and help the department to achieve the referral to treatment (RTT) 18-week targets, 2-week wait, and 28, 31 and 62 day faster diagnostic standards reducing diagnostic and cancer waiting times.

Main duties of the job

The primary focus of the role is thedelivery and further development of Bowel Cancer Screening Programme within the Trust. The successful candidate should have both subspecialty interest in BCSP and management of complex polyps (EMR). They will contribute to audit and service improvement plans in line with JAG and BCSP.

In addition to advanced endoscopy, the postholder will contribute to general gastroenterology services, including inpatient care, outpatient clinics, and participation in the gastroenterology on-call rota. The balance of clinical activity will reflect the advanced endoscopy nature of the post, with a significant proportion of programmed activities allocated to BCSP.

A commitment to Endoscopy is expected and with appropriate allocation in the job plan the candidate will make an equal contribution to the care of Gastroenterology inpatients and the out-of-hours GI-Bleed endoscopy service which is 1:7 at present with plans to transition to a 1:8 model with further recruitment.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

MBBS, MRCP or Equivalent Entry on GMC Specialist Register or eligible for entry on the specialist register within six months Evidence of completion of specialist training or equivalent

Desirable

A higher degree in medicine (e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent)

Experience and Knowledge Essential

BCSP Accredited Accredited and independent in Upper GI and lower GI endoscopy Comprehensive knowledge in the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems

Desirable

Complex polypectomy skills NHS experience within the last 3 years

Teaching Essential

Knowledge & Experience of supervising and teaching clinical skills
