Job summary

The Red House Surgery is delighted to offer a part-time position for an experienced practice nurse within a busy, friendly and supportive NHS GP practice team. Hours are negotiable

This post requires an enthusiastic, very organised and friendly person who has the ability to adapt to a variety of duties and who is willing to take on any tasks that may be required to ensure the smooth running of our surgery.

Experience in practice nursing is desirable.

Pay is negotiable, pending experience.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will demonstrate flexibility, good communication skills, and an ability to work as a team member as well as using own initiative.

This is an excellent opportunity to further develop your clinical skills. The post holder will be a registered nurse with a NMC PIN, and General Practice nursing experience. They will demonstrate a commitment to further learning and development to improve overall health and well being of our patients.

Core duties include:

Childhood, travel and other routine immunisations and injections

Women's health including cervical screening, contraception and HRT checks

Wound care

Chronic disease management of long term conditions

Ear irrigation.

Smoking cessation advice.

We are a team proactive nursing team, consisting of a lead nurse, and two practice nurses who work alongside 3 GP partners, 8 salaried GPs, 2 Registrars, 2 General Practice Assistants, Clinical Pharmacist, Pharmacy Technician and a Advanced Clinical Practitioner.

Job description Job responsibilities

The role is to provide high quality nursing services, which includes health promotion, to the practice population in collaboration with the Primary Health Care Team, meeting the needs of the patients and supporting the delivery of the practice policies and procedures. The post holder will work within their professional competence in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice.

1. Professional Responsibilities

To work within NMC Guidelines and to agreed practice protocols

To maintain high standards of clinical practice by ensuring the application of available evidence based research and agreed protocols

To work in collaboration with the Primary Health Care team to address identified individual and population needs

To identify and address own learning needs by participation in the processes of personal professional and practice development planning

To access clinical supervision

To maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records and registers in accordance with practice policy

To maintain confidentiality in accordance with NMC and agreed Practice and Information Governance policy.

2. Clinical Responsibilities to include;

To manage treatment room consultations such as minor injuries, wound dressings and treatment of leg ulcers, suture removal, ear examination and syringing.

Administer routine injections in accordance with the practice policy i.e.

Childhood and adult immunisations in accordance with national guidelines. Flu vaccinations, travel vaccines and completion of patient vaccination records. Anti-psychotic injections, Vitamin B12 injections and contraceptive injections.

To undertake nurse chronic disease consultations such as diabetes and asthma reviews.

Provide women's health services including cervical cytology and advice on contraception and the menopause according to practice policy.

To undertake investigative procedures including venepuncture and ECG

To prepare and assist with minor surgical procedures

To prepare and assist with the fitting of IUCDs

To prepare and assist with the removal of Implants

To assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by Lead Practice Nurse, GPs and Practice Business Manager.

To be responsible for the assessment of health needs of patients and the provision of care/treatment in conjunction with the GP, other members of the PHCT or independently, undertaken ongoing evaluation of the care/treatment outcomes, modifying practice as necessary and documenting progress.

3. Additional responsibilities

To liaise and refer to other health care professionals, attend and participate in practice meetings on a regular basis, report any areas of concern

To support and participate in the development of practice policies and protocols and the implementation of.

To provide a friendly, happy and positive working environment for both staff and patients

To work with other members of the team towards the achievement of targets defined in raising standards in primary care.

To ensure your treatment room is fully stocked and clean at all times.

To assist in and perform routine admin tasks related to patient care as directed by Lead Practice Nurse, GPs and Practice Business Manager.

Person Specification

Experience Essential

Proven clinical practice (revalidation) Experience of utilising reflective practice. Experience of medical and surgical nursing care. At least 2 years post-registration.

Desirable

Experience of working in a GP practice. An understanding of the current nursing agenda. Awareness of broader issues within Primary Care and the NHS. Understanding of safeguarding adults and children.

Knowledge and skills Essential

Good knowledge of NMC Code of Conduct and guidelines of professional practice. Health and safety awareness. Quality issues and Clinical Governance awareness. Awareness of need to demonstrate a professional appearance and behaviour. Excellent communication and organisational skills. Computer literate. Able to manage own workload. Punctuality and reliability. Able to work under pressure. Willingness to adapt to change as the organisation develops. Intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, dressings, ECG, venepuncture. Able to assist GPs with sterile procedures. Understanding of chronic disease management.

Desirable

Knowledge of SystmOne. Flexible approach to working in line with service requirements.

Qualifications Essential

Degree or DipHE in Nursing Studies. Current registration with NMC on part one or two of the register as a trained nurse. Current revalidation. At least 2 years post registration experience in an acute or community setting.

Desirable

Practice Nurse qualification/experience. Chronic condition management qualification, such as Warwick course, for diabetes, asthma, COPD.
