In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Microbiologist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) utilizing concepts of microbiology, molecular biology, or biochemistry applicable to environmental (e.g., arthropod-borne, water-borne) diseases to plan, conduct and evaluate research investigations; and 2) applying agency regulations, policies and procedures applicable to Federal statutes that govern an analytical testing program. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Major DutiesLead and manage the design, development, and standardization of genetic based testing methods (i.e. rt-PCR and NGS) to detect the presence of vector-borne, environmental, and wastewater pathogens.Responsible for the development and implementation of standard operating procedures for routine laboratory-based PCR detection, as well as special procedures for methods designed to reflect new molecular biology techniques and sequencing.Coordinate all collaborative studies to determine suitability of methods, accuracy, precision, and percentage recovery of analytes.Provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) oversight to professional and technical laboratory personnel.Set workload priorities to ensure work is accomplished on schedule and in accordance with documented laboratory procedures.Ensure that all subsequent analytical procedures conform to Command Policy, accrediting agency requirements, and Federal laws.
