QualificationsBASIC REQUIREMENTS: 1. Must be at least 18 years old AND have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; OR have completed a formal vocational training program; OR have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with preference for employment rather than continuing education. (Valid documentation will be required upon hire.) 2. Work experience as an automotive worker in performing automotive repairs to include removing, replacing, and adjusting defective parts or components. ASE certification or equivalent preferred. 3. Must have a valid driver's license, and the ability to obtain a government license for trucks, tow trucks, and forklifts. 4. Ability to use high-tech diagnostic tools and diagnose defects in automotive equipment. 5. Ability to perform basic clerical duties to include use of cash register, personal computer, and preparation of simple forms and reports. Ability to use a data management computer system to look up vehicle repair history and enter work order information. 6. Ability to read, understand, and apply information from service manuals (including electronic service manuals), diagnostic aids, flow charts, charts, and graphs. 7. Ability use various hand power tools, automotive tools and servicing equipment such as an air conditioning recycler, hydraulic jack, brake lathe, emission analyzer, various welding machines, and other related equipment. 8. Must have ability to lift arms above shoulder level to install and remove auto parts; bend or stoop and remain standing repeatedly over time to repair equipment; move objects weighing more than 40 pounds distances 20 feet or less. 9.Initiative to continue training in the latest knowledge and techniques of the trade. To be hired at Grade-7, candidate must have either one ASE or ASE-equivalent automotive certification -or- an active tow truck license. To be hired at Grade-8, candidate must both an ASE or ASE-equivalent automotive certification -and- an active tow truck license, and must have the following knowledge: 1.Knowledge of how vehicles¿ complex components work and interact. Ability to work with electronic diagnostic equipment and digital manuals and reference materials, integrated electronic systems and complex computers regulate vehicles and their performance while on the road. 2. Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and equipment of automotive mechanic trade; automotive systems including but not limited to steering, suspension, brakes, engines, transmissions, drive axles, fuel, cooling, electrical, and engine and body control systems; the occupational hazards and standard safety precautions of the automotive mechanic trade. Major DutiesNONAPPROPRIATED FUNDS POSITION DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Automotive Worker FLSA: Non-exempt JOB Code: 093084/03268/93002A JOB SERIES: 5823 PAY LEVEL: NA-6/7/8 STATEMENT OF DIFFERENCE: This position's pay level is NA-06/07/08. NA-06 - Performs all duties and responsibilities of the current PD under direct supervision/instruction for six (6) months at a minimum rating of acceptable on the employee performance appraisal and obtains the licenses for a forklift and tow truck to qualify for NA07. NA-07 - Performs all duties and responsibilities of the current PD at the above NA06 requirements and under limited to no supervision/instruction for an additional six (6) months at a minimum rating of acceptable on the employee performance appraisal and acquires one ASE certification to qualify for NA08. NA-08 - Performs all duties and responsibilities of the current PD at the above NA07 requirements and under limited to no supervision for an additional six (6) months. MAJOR DUTIES: Performs all types of equipment and vehicle maintenance including but not limited to oil changes, replacing filters, lubrication, wheel bearing service, tire service, transmission service and differential service. Performs vehicle repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing adjusting or cleaning defective automotive parts or components. Diagnoses, locates, and repairs defects in electrical, electronic, and computerized vehicle systems including but not limited to anti-lock brakes, traction control, supplemental impact restraint (air bags), lighting systems, starting and charging systems, emission control systems and transmission systems; Performs computerized drivability diagnostics, repairs, tests, and adjusts all types of diesel, gasoline and alternative fuel engine and emissions systems to manufacturer specifications; Diagnoses, adjusts, and repairs electric systems. Diagnoses, adjusts, and repairs braking systems, including but not limited to replacing friction materials, resurfacing rotors, and drums, replacing sensors, actuators, and hydraulic parts. Diagnoses, adjusts, and repairs drive trains, including but not limited to clutches, manual/automatic transmissions/transaxles, transfer cases, drive shafts and differentials. Diagnoses equipment for proper operation by using test equipment and/or road testing. Inspects work and provides mechanical and technical assistance and training to other Automotive Workers/Helpers. Repairs a large variety of automotive-specific tools and equipment such as but not limited to two and four post vehicle lifts, air conditioning recovery, recycle, and recharge machines, tire changing machines, wheel balancing machines, air compressors, forklifts, brake lathes, and jacks. Researches and finds sources of repair and replacement parts. Develops strategies and procedures for repair of automotive equipment and tools. Assembles, installs, repairs, or removes special enforcement and emergency equipment; and do other related work. Operates and repairs various control applications including, but not limited to, engine control, emissions control, dashboard instrumentation, climate control, door/window locking, and alarm systems. Identifies parts by stock number and enters this information on shop tickets together with hours of labor, cost, and description of work accomplished. Keeps all records incidental to work. Operates government owned vehicles such as light duty trucks, passenger vans, forklifts, and tow trucks in support of the automotive program. Shares responsibility of holding the 24-hour emergency phone with other drivers in the Auto Recovery Center and Towing sections. Shares responsibility with the other licensed tow drivers for responding to after-hours requests for emergency towing services supporting the military police (infrequent). Performs other related duties as assigned, such as cash register (Point-of-Sales) duties, clerical work to include updating of computer data bases, filing of office, environmental, Blanket Purchase Agreement and all other documents unique to the facility. When required, operates retail sales store, answers phone calls, places parts orders and vehicle repair requests to vendors, interact with customers and provide information to meet customer needs. Cleans facility, to include offices, shop bays/stalls, restrooms, closets, common areas and outside areas within the compound. May act as a duty manager during the managers absence and assists on all inspections, audits, reviews, and assessments conducted at the facility.
