Candidates must possess Primary/Rigorous wildland firefighting experience, gained through fire line work in containment, control, suppression or use of wildland fire. You must clearly demonstrate this experience in your resume, including the months, days, and hours per week at which the work was performed to be considered. Applicants must have documented prior primary firefighting experience, with substantial service defined as either: At least one full fire season working in a primary wildland firefighting role (e.g., Engine Crew, Fire Effects Crew, Prescribed Fire/Fuels Crew, Hand Crew, Helitack Crew, Hotshot Crew, Smokejumper, Wildland Fire Modules or Fire Suppression Crews, etc.) with a federal, state, tribal, local, or private-sector organization. -OR- At least 14 days of on-the-ground fireline experience (cumulative or consecutive). Prior primary wildland fire experience must be clearly documented in your resume. Note: an IQCS Master Record or equivalent document will not be used to determine or calculate prior primary wildland fire experience eligibility for this requirement.; - AND - In addition, to qualify for this position, you must possess the following specialized experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS/GW -08 level in the Federal service. Special experience will include; Applying wildland fire management principles, fire behavior, suppression tactics, and the Incident Command System (ICS) to support interagency wildland fire training; assisting with the development, delivery, or evaluation of training programs; and collaborating with interagency partners to support firefighter qualification, operational readiness, and incident performance. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Major DutiesAs a Wildland Firefighter (Training) -Direct Hire Authority your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Develop and update wildland fire training to support firefighter qualifications and operational readiness. Provide technical fire expertise to ensure training aligns with current standards and field operations. Coordinate interagency training activities with partners, subject matter experts, and stakeholders. Evaluate and improve training programs using incident feedback, lessons learned, and after-action reviews. Support incident readiness and response by maintaining qualifications and participating in operational assignments.RequirementsU.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Direct Deposit participation required. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. You must be willing to live and work in remote locations. Government Housing is not available. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. Subject to frequent extended travel up to 15 nights per month particularly during fire season, and you must obtain a government charge card for travel. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. You are required to wear a uniform and comply with uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. This is a Drug Test Designated Position. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. We may use this announcement to fill additional vacancies within 90 days of 08/18/2026. Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.
