Job SummaryYou will serve as a Field Unit Local Hiring Authority (FUL) -Maintenance Mechanic (Trails) National Park Service located at Divison of Facilities Management, These position(s) has a mixed work schedule based on the varying workload, and your work schedule is subject to change from part-time (8 hours per week from mid-December to mid-January to full-time from mid-December to mid-January (40 hours per week/80 per pay period) as workload dictates.

Major DutiesThis is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. Position is located in the Trails Maintenance Branch within the Facilities Management Division of Olympic National Park. This position performs sub-journeyman level maintenance, repair and construction of Park trails. Position is duty stationed at Park headquarters in Port Angeles WA with most work performed throughout the park in both front and backcountry settings. Requires frequent overnight backcountry stays. Work composes in all aspects of trail maintenance and construction. Work is performed in all types of weather and working conditions. Many nights spent in the backcountry cooking over small gas stoves and sleeping in backpacking tents. Works a schedule of 8 ten hour days followed by 6 days off. Must have the ability to hike up to 20 miles a day carrying tools and gear needed to perform trail work. Trail Maintenance, Construction, and Design; Carpentry; Rigging; Forestry (Tree felling, bucking, and climbing); Masonry; and Equipment Operation.RequirementsMust provide proof of U.S. citizenship. Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Class A endorsement within 365 days of EOD. You are required to wear a uniform and comply with the uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. Must have a current or obtain by EOD an American Red Cross CPR and First Aid Certification. You are required to complete training, obtain and maintain a government credit card with travel and purchase authority. You may be required to work weekends, holidays, and overtime. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 16-20 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a trial period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. This trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service.
