Position Summary
Job Type: Temporary, Part-time – Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, 9am-1pm,
September 14, 2026 to June 30, 2027
Hours of Work: Primarily daytime, occasional evening or weekend work may be required

The Cook is a key member of the qaymɩχʷqɛnəmšt program team who provides healthy nourishment to the Kindergarten and Grade 1 Tla’amin či čuy attending this school program. The qaymɩχʷqɛnəmšt Cook plays a key role in creating a welcoming, culturally grounded learning environment for the či čuy.
Key Responsibilities
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin policies, standards, practices and procedures as directed by the Education Manager. Maintains confidentiality as required regarding citizens, members, clients, employees and general matters of the Nation.
• Collaborates with manager, dietitian, and program staff in developing a lunch menu plan in accordance with accepted nutritional guidelines such as Canada’s Food Guide for healthy eating and the individual dietary needs of the či čuy.
• Prepares, cooks and serves lunch and snacks in accordance with safety and health standards and the approved menu plan.
• Ensures safety of all relevant či čuy and staff by being mindful of food allergies.
• Oversees the operation and organization of the cooking facilities and equipment and ensures their cleanliness and maintenance.
• Develops and purchases a weekly shopping list of foods necessary for the preparation of program snacks and lunches.
• Stores all items following safety and health standards.
• Incorporate traditional and seasonal foods where possible.
• Maintains an inventory of food and other related items.
• Assist staff or volunteers with food-related needs during special gathering or program events.
• Performs other related duties as required by the manager.
Qualifications
Training, Education, Experience
• Completion of Grade 12.
• Minimum 1-2 years hands-on experience in food preparation, cooking and kitchen operations.
• A combination of education and experience will be considered.
• Experience developing and maintaining food safety standards including safe food handling, storage and sanitation.
• Experience coordinating food and supply purchasing, inventory control, and stock replenishment.
• Experience working with dietary restrictions and menu planning in school and/or childcare settings.
• Current Food Safe Certificate.
• Successful Criminal Record check with vulnerable Sector Check.
• Class 5 BC Driver’s License and acceptable Driving Record.
• Current TB Test.
• Current Basic First Aid and CPR certification or willingness to obtain.
• Experience working with or within an Indigenous community is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
• Knowledge of Canada’s Food Guide and healthy eating nutritional requirements.
• Well-developed oral communication and reading skills.
• Ability to identify common kitchen hazards and knowledge of how to safely reduce their risk.
• Excellent organization and time management skills.
• Ability to interact respectfully with či čuy, staff, and families.
• Ability to make and follow a budget or work within an assigned budget.
• Ability to work independently and as a team member.
• Ability to stand for periods of time and carry some heavy food items.
• Ability to be punctual and reliable.
• Knowledge of relevant equipment.
Working Conditions
This position requires occasional lifting up to 20 lbs, standing for extended periods of time, and repetitive motion including bending. Adherence to all WorkSafe regulations and safe work practices is required as well as to Tla’amin Nation’s Safety policies and protocols.
