About this role
TITLE: Custodian GRADE: L CONTRACTUAL DAYS: 260 REPORTS TO: Principal JOB GOAL: The custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment in the school building and on school grounds. This includes routine cleaning, minor maintenance, and ensuring that school facilities are presentable and properly prepared for daily operations and special events. Qualifications:
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Prior custodial or facilities maintenance experience is preferred.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks (standing, bending, reaching) for extended periods.
• Basic knowledge of cleaning products, supplies, and equipment.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to work cooperatively with staff and contribute to a positive school environment.
Performance Duties:
• Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and fields, neat, clean, and free from rubbish at all times.
• Cleans all designated areas of the building, including classrooms, restrooms, offices, cafeterias, and common spaces as assigned by the principal.
• Scrubs and disinfects restroom floors daily and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains.
• Keeps all floors in a clean, attractive, and safe condition through sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, stripping, waxing, buffing, and other floor care as needed.
• Sets up and breaks down furniture and equipment for breakfast, lunch, meetings, assemblies, and special events.
• Takes trash and garbage to outside dumpsters as needed; empties recycling bins.
• Performs minor building repairs within ability and promptly reports larger repair needs or safety hazards to the principal or supervisor.
• Immediately report any damage to school property.
• Assists with snow and ice removal by shoveling, plowing, and salting walkways, steps, and driveways.
• Maintains custodial closets, tools, and equipment in clean and organized condition.
• Assumes responsibility for opening and closing the building, securing all doors and windows, and turning off unnecessary lights at the end of the day.
• Remains on the premises during school hours and during building use outside of school hours when required by the principal.
• Attends required staff meetings and trainings.
• Maintains high standards of ethical behavior, professionalism, and confidentiality as expected of all staff members.
• Discharges all responsibilities and fulfills obligations as specified in the contract, policies, and guidelines of the Floyd County School Board.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or superintendent.
