QUALIFICATIONS Hold a master's degree in school counseling from an accredited college or university Meet the certification requirements for school counselor from the New York State Department of Education Ability to pass employment verification PRIMARY FUNCTIONS Develop and deliver school counseling curriculum in classroom setting (small group). Assist students in the areas of academic development, career development, and character education, as well as, emotional and social development Collaborate with faculty, staff, and parents to better understand and meet the needs of all students Provide individual and small group counseling as needed Make appropriate referrals of students and parents to outside agencies and specialists when necessary Pursue continuous professional development and growth Educate and promote an understanding and appreciation for diverse populations Develop, review, and revise a career and educational plan for each student Monitor and advise students and parents as to progress toward promotion and graduation Develop academic student schedule in accordance with New York State learning standards and graduation requirements regarding students' skills, interest, strengths, and grade Prepare students for transition to next level (elementary to middle, middle to high school, high school to post high school) MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES COUNSELING Conduct group sessions, in accordance with the ASCA Model by addressing academic achievement, career planning and social/emotional development Review tests, student data and other assessments and appropriately discuss their implications with students and parents Demonstrate a knowledge of and comply with all MVCSD board policies Comply with the Ethical Responsibility of the Education Profession Standards of Professional Conduct and Code of Ethics CONSULTING Provide information and resources to parents, school staff, administration, and the community to assist them in helping students in academic, career, attendance and social development Take a facilitative role in working counseling content into the curriculum, staff development, and parent education programs COORDINATING Advocate for equal access to programs and services for all students Plan and coordinate programs such as career and college fairs, scholarship programs, and other extensions of the counseling curriculum Additional Duties and Responsibilities Determine guidance priorities based on locally assessed needs Formulate measurable objectives from identified needs and priorities Conduct orientation for students, parents and staff GUIDANCE CURRICULUM MANAGEMENT Deliver, evaluate, and revise a sequential and developmentally appropriate school counseling curriculum which will include lessons in academic development, career development, and character development Utilize resources available within the school and community to develop appropriate programs Follow the Curriculum/Pacing Guide to address objectives for each grade level INDIVIDUAL PLANNING On the secondary level, meet with students on an annual basis to develop an individualized written career and educational plan PROGRAM MANAGEMENT Participate in the review of the school-counseling program on an on- going basis with other school counselors and administrators Develop and maintain skills needed to utilize technology systems and participate in professional development opportunities SCHOOL SYSTEM Participate in school decision making and in activities which contribute to the effectiveness of the school Cooperate and collaborate with other professionals in enhancing the education of students. Communicate with administrators, teachers, staff, parents, and students as to the role of the school counselor in the overall educational process PROFESSIONALISM Adhere to the ethical standards and best practices of state and national school counselor associations Demonstrate knowledge of district policies and Commissioner's Regulation §100.2(j) Guidance Programs and Comprehensive Developmental School Counseling/Guidance Programs Demonstrate personal growth and professional development Perform such other task and assume such responsibilities as requested by Principal and/or School Counselor
