Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for an assistant psychologist to join the Clinical Health Psychology Services at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Trust. The applicant will form part of the Bariatric Psychology Service and support the team in delivering psychology assessments and interventions to patients referred by the Bariatric team based at Sunderland Royal Hospital. The successful applicant will be working alongside the Bariatric Psychology team which includes an assistant psychologist, CBT practitioner and clinical psychologists. You will provide psychologically informed care directly and indirectly across the service. There are opportunities for group and one to one work, as well as working with wider members of the Bariatric MDT.
The post holder will be supported to develop their experience and skills within their role through CPD and supervision.
There will be opportunities to be involved in service development and evaluation. Supervision for clinical work will be provided by a senior clinical psychologist with expertise and experience in Bariatric Psychology.

Main duties of the job
This role is well suited to someone who has an interest in working within physical health services and working as part of a wider MDT.
The service provides specialist assessments and interventions for patients referred for Bariatric Surgery. You will support in the delivery of group-based interventions as well as one to one work appropriate to your level of experience.
There are opportunities to form part of Specialist Interest Groups both regionally and nationally, and the post holder will be supported to develop within their role.

Job description Job responsibilities
The post holder will be responsible for supporting the clinical activity, audit and research of the Bariatric Psychology Service. The post holder will be required to work at all times under the NHS policies and procedures and within the scope of appropriate level of training and competence. To work independently according to a plan agreed and reviewed through regular supervision by a qualified applied HCPC registered Psychologist. Will also receive supervision from suitably qualified staff within the service.

Person Specification
Experience Essential
Experience of working with people with a diagnosis of a mental health condition Experience of working with people within physical health settings or with people with a a physical/ long term condition. Experience of paid work in a direct care provision Experience of working to a demanding schedule and capable of completing and finishing tasks.
Desirable
Experience of working as an Assistant Psychologist Experience of undertaking research/audit/data collection Experience of psychometric assessments Experience in delivery psychological therapies both in a group or 1:1.
Qualifications Essential
An upper second class honours degree or higher in Psychology which provides a graduate basis for registration of the British Psychological Society. Post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis.
Physical skills Essential
Ability to sit in constrained position for extended periods frequently. The ability to work in a shared office space. Requirement for speed and accuracy, keyboard skills. Ability to travel between bases/ sites as part of the role.
Skills and Knowledge Essential
Good communication skills (written and verbal) Ability to work in setting in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive. Ability to communicate sensitive information to patients, carers and colleagues. An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to a health context. Competent in the use of Microsoft Office & statistical software packages Ability to undertake literature searches and evaluate research evidence. Ability to work independently, reliably and consistently. Be able to use supervision appropriately and effectively. Ability work independently, self-motivate, set objective and priorities to manage workload. Ability to work under pressure in a complex and changing environment.
