About this role

Job Summary The Adult English Language and Literacy Centers (AELLs) are the direct service providers of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and adult literacy instruction for the Library. They use professional teachers to offer free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level. Through formal classes in language and literacy, as well as elective offerings in digital literacy, numeracy, and career development, and non enrollment options such as English conversation and citizenship preparation groups, AELLs are charged with the goal of expanding ESOL and adult literacy instruction in the Library. https://www.nypl.org/events/classes/english The Library is seeking an Office Aide to provide quality customer service to our Library users. This position will be scheduled for 17.5 hours per week during public service hours. Responsibilities: Reporting to the Hub Manager, the Office Aide: Works as part of a team to provide public service and assist with outreach activities Provides assistance to patrons on the use of computers and other technology or software Welcome patrons and respond to in-person inquiries related to the ESOL / Literacy unit Answer phone and in-person inquiries Check in/out books, maintain the print collection Issue library cards Maintain room reservation calendar Provide administrative support to the Hub Manager and Intake Advisor including photocopying, maintaining calendars and organizing meetings, etc. Order and maintain office supplies and program materials Assist in student intake (student registration, pretesting, posttesting) Maintain program files Perform data entry (ASISTS rosters, test scores, etc.) Performs related duties as required Required Education and Certifications High School Diploma or GED Required Experience Demonstrated knowledge of computer services including on-line searching and Library resources preferred Successfully demonstrated public service experience with the ability to work well with a diverse patronage Required Skills Proficiency with Envisionware and Sierra preferred Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills Successfully demonstrated ability to work as part of a team Attention to detail Strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to perform multiple projects or tasks simultaneously Strong computer and other related technology skills, including MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Google applications, PCs, Macs and e-reader devices Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities: N/A
