An exciting opportunity has arisen for a clinical psychologist to join the expanding team at the National Spinal Injuries Centre (NSIC) and develop clinical skills of working in rehabilitation with inpatients across the lifespan. This is a 6 month fixed term maternity leave cover (with the possibility to extend). The NSIC team consists of clinical psychologists, a psychological therapist and family counsellor, administrator and assistant psychologists and leads national and international clinically based research.
Applications are encouraged from those currently employed as a Band 7 Clinical Psychologist (or equivalent HCPC reqistered psychological practitioners). Supervision is available from a BABCP accredited supervisor to support ongoing BABCP accreditation processes if relevant to the applicant.
Required working days would be Monday to Friday.

Main duties of the job
Clinical interventions include individual CBT, ACT and mindfulness-based therapy, neuropsychological rehabilitation and specific condition interventions such as for chronic pain. The post will involve close working with non-psychology colleagues from across the MDT. A systematic rehabilitation approach facilitating self-management skills is core to our provision, with the team leading the renowned Stoke Mandeville Spinal Needs Assessment and Goal Planning Programme (finalist for HSJ in 2016).
The NSIC provides inpatient care to 30% of adult spinal cord injuries within NHS England and is the leading provider of paediatric spinal cord injury services. The NSIC at Stoke Mandeville Hospital pioneered the rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injury.
The psychology team has led several national and international research partnerships, past and present, and has over 150 publications in peer reviewed journals, textbooks, and an increasing profile of research impact including podcasts, policy/guideline development and social media engagements.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING Essential
Post Graduate doctoral qualification in Clinical Psychology recognised by the BPS. Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the British Psychological Society. Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Clinical Psychologist.

Post doctoral training (e.g. in a therapeutic model)
EXPERIENCE Essential
Assessed experience of working as a qualified Clinical Psychologist at a specialist level. Supervised experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity, maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse, and the threat of physical abuse. Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment, both as a care coordinator and with the context of a multidisciplinary care plan. Experienced of working as a trainee / clinical psychologist in the spinal cord injury or health psychology context. Demonstrated expertise in Clinical Health Psychology. Experience of teaching, training and professional and clinical supervision of a range of health care professionals. Experience of skills and interest in working across the lifespan including adults, older adults, children, and young people.
Desirable
Experience within an acute hospital environment, representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care.
SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE Essential
Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, formulation, and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings (including outpatient and inpatient settings) frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration. Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
Desirable
Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g., personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities etc.) Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of clinical psychology. Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health. Skills in the line management and leadership of other professionals. Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours. Ability to identify and employ as appropriate clinical governance mechanisms for the support and maintenance of clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour.
