The post holder will job share the management of 2 busy High dependency units.

The post holder will be responsible for the effective and efficient operational management of Critical Care departments. Ensuring high standards of care are delivered to patients and oversight of clinical governance within the department.

The post holder will provide clinical leadership and support budget control, clinical governance, staff development and training. The post holder will also be involved in the development of policies, protocols / guidelines and patient information.

Job description Job responsibilities

Clinical Leadership and Managerial

Ensuring patients receives high standards of care and positive patient experience in line with the clinical guidelines and policies of the Trust.

Lead the departmental team and build successful links between key professionals to support and promote effective multi-disciplinary team working.

Directly line manage and support qualified and non-qualified staff within the department,

Communicate and liaise effectively and efficiently with the members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that patients receive seamless care.

Comply with the Trusts standing policies, procedures and financial instructions.

Ensure that the departments have adequate resources / equipment to provide an effective service.

Ensure the Matron is informed when changes to circumstances may affect standards of care, patients safety and staff wellbeing.

Participate in nursing and multi professional research and audit and to implement actions identified from quality initiatives.

Lead and support the ward team through the process of change demonstrating tenacity, drive, professional integrity, balance and perspective.

Support Acute Response team / Critical Care Outreach Team in ensuring high standards of care and positive experience are delivered to patients.

Deputise for the Matron in his/her absence

Act as an advocate for patients within the department, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within relevant guidelines

Staff Management, Education and Training

Ensure staff have updated mandatory training, appraisal in line with the Trust policy.

Manage sickness, capability, probation and disciplinary procedure in line with the Human Resources and Trust policies.

Work with the Matron and Human Resources department in the recruitment, selection, appointment and retention of staff.

Actively participate and work closely with Practice Development Nurse (PDN) of the department in the teaching programmes and maintaining accurate training records of junior staff and students.

Ensure that appropriate staff receive training and professional education in accordance with the NMC Code and revalidation recommendations.

Ensure that staff attend and assist in training where appropriate on mandatory training sessions and maintain accurate records of these.

Participate in the education and assessment of staff undertaking a specialist course or further education programmes.

Lead and organise team meetings at an appropriate frequency, recording and circulating minutes of these. To ensure a good method of communication within the department at all times and to encourage the exchange and implementation of new ideas and evidence based practice

Clinical Governance, Audit and Research

Demonstrate a high level of commitment and enthusiasm for research, evidence based practice, audit and education in the clinical area.

Lead departmental and hospital audits relevant to training and ensure that findings are shared within the wider group.

Actively participate in reconfiguration projects, service redesign developments and quality improvement program of the department.

Support and be proactive in the risk assessment, management, clinical incident reporting and management of complaints.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Adult Registered or Registered General Nurse on the NMC register Specialist critical care course or equivalent Mentorship / teaching qualification Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development in relevant area of speciality supplemented by specialist clinical, managerial training and CPD Management qualification or equivalent relevant experience

Knowledge Essential

Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues in critical care An understanding of audit and research-based nursing practice An understanding of resource management Awareness of clinical governance and risk management issues

Experience Essential

Demonstrable experience as senior critical care staff Demonstrable critical care course experience post ICU qualification Experience of managing a team, ability to coordinate and review people's performance Experience of managing HR issues such as capability and sickness absence Experience of participation in research project Experience of managing change and supporting others in managing

Skills Essential

Able to assess plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients / clients and give relevant advice / information to patients and relatives Excellent communication skills and ability to deal with sensitive information. To include dealing with distressed relatives, care of terminally ill and other challenging situations Demonstrates ability to influence and negotiate with others Is able to analyse data and identify data trends Is able to use Microsoft packages such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint Is able to manage staffing and supply budgets effectively Is able to manage team and individual performance
