Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic pharmacist to lead our friendly and supportive Medicines Information (MI) team within the Pharmacy Department at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH).
You will be responsible for co-ordinating and supervising the day-to-day provision of a high quality Medicines Information service to healthcare professionals within the Trust and to patients via our established medicines helpline, while supporting the long-term planning, organisation and delivery of the service.
You will also support the Clinical Pharmacy team by delivering direct patient care at ward level and acting as a clinical role model for other staff.
Main duties of the job
In addition to providing a high quality clinical enquiry answering service,you will be actively involved in training and supporting our junior rotational staff and will have the chance to drive service improvement projects within the department.
We are looking for an experienced pharmacist with excellent communication and organisational skills and the desire to provide a high quality, safe, effective and efficient service to our healthcare professionals and patients.
Our friendly and supportive Medicines Information team also comprises of a specialist clinical pharmacist, rotational band 6 pharmacists and a specialist pharmacy technician.

Medicines information
Analyse and interpret highly complex information from a variety of sources to provide expert evaluated medicines information and advice in response toenquiries from pharmacy, medical and nursing staff, allied healthcare professionals and members of the public (via the medicines helpline).
Lead the planning and organisation of the day-to-day activity of the Medicines Information Service.
Promote, evaluate and further develop the medicines helpline for patients.
Manage and assist in the production of proactive medicines information.
Manage the information resources for NUH pharmacy staff and ensure that all resources are up to date and communicated appropriately to the wider trust.
Ensure that all standard operating procedures are in place and current and develop new procedures where appropriate.
Oversee the training and development of junior medicines information staff.
Lead the medicines information department directly line managing members of this team and acting as a role model
Lead on the internal peer review system and assist with the audit of enquiries.
Lead on the development and review of risk assessments within medicines information.
As lead for the Medicines Information team, ensure that medicines recalls and notifications received into the Trust are dealt with in a timely manner.
Collaborate with local and national specialists and groups to enable best practice to be identified and incorporated into NUH practice.
To support strategy development and review of planning processes in Medicines Information by keeping abreast of national developments and strategy documents and attending regional and national meetings as appropriate.
Lead in the provision and update of national monographs for the NHS Injectable Medicines guide and assist in the maintenance and update of any local monographs
Work closely and effectively with members of the Pharmacy Procurement team in solving problems relating to medication shortages and discontinuations.
Clinical Pharmacy
Ensure safe, rational and effective prescribing by undertaking medication reconciliation, assessing suitability of prescribed medication, enabling use of patients own medicines and patient self-administration, counselling (to optimise medicines use), and ensuring continuity of patient care into the community.
Interpreting and requesting clinical tests to monitor and make recommendations to improve effectiveness of drug therapy.
Pro-actively liaising with other members of the multidisciplinary team (medical staff, nurses, microbiologists, physiotherapists, dieticians) in order to ensure safe use of medicines.
Making recommendations about medicines to improve patient outcomes, promote formulary adherence and align with national guidelines.

Training & Qualifications Essential
Clinical Diploma or equivalent qualification or demonstrable equivalent clinical experience Completed the National Medicines Information training course

Extensive experience of delivering medicines information services within an NHS Trust including knowledge of the resources and systems utilised in this area Broad knowledge base of a wide range of clinical areas Experience of preparing and delivering training and education of both pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals
Communication & Relationship Skills Essential
Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, both verbal and written - must be able to communicate highly complex drug or medicine related information to prescribers, clinicians, patients, relatives, relevant Trust committees and other stakeholders. Patients may have language difficulties, physical or mental disabilities; other professionals may challenge advice. Confident and assertive; able to defend opinions in a constructive manner when challenged; inspires confidence. Able to motivate and inspire others to recognise the importance of excellent medicines information and advice throughout an organisation
Analytical & Judgement Skills Essential
Excellent literature searching skills and use of appropriate search strategies for medicines information enquiries Experience in making judgements involving highly complex facts, which require critical evaluation, interpretation and options appraisal
Planning & Organisation Skills Essential
Ability to be flexible and manage change in a complex and changing healthcare environment. Excellent organisational skills, able to motivate others, to manage time effectively and work to deadlines, even when under pressure
