GENERAL INFORMATION

Title: Instructional Assistant - Kindergarten Department: Heritage Elementary School Salary Grade: Schedule A or B FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Site/Location: Heritage Elementary School Reports to: Building Administrator Date: 07/23/2026

POSITION SUMMARY

Performs responsible human support and paraprofessional work while assisting classroom teachers or other professionals to achieve instructional objectives; and while assisting students with achieving established goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Assists classroom teacher in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks to achieve and enhance instructional objectives.

• Works with individuals or small groups to reinforce learning objectives introduced by the teacher.

• Provides programmed practice activities and repetitions as developed by the teacher.

• Assists with large and small group activities.

• Guides independent study and other work assigned by the teacher.

• Reports student problems to the teacher and assists with student problems.

• Assists with loading and unloading buses.

• Supervise students during unstructured time such as lunch, recess, and transitions.

• Assists with student routines.

• Performs related work as required.

• Assist in establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior.

• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

• Assist in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.

• Help maintain order in the classroom; monitor students to keep them on task.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Must possess a High School Diploma or GED  

• Minimum of sixty (60) college credit hours, or Associate's Degree

• Successfully completed the ParaPro AssessmentKnowledge of basic instructional methods, learning activities, and strategies used to reinforce teacher-directed lessons. Knowledge of student supervision, classroom expectations, safety procedures, and appropriate behavior-management practices. Skill in assisting individual students and small groups with assigned learning activities, practice exercises, and classroom routines. Skill in monitoring students during classroom activities, lunch, recess, transitions, and bus loading and unloading. Ability to follow teacher directions, communicate student concerns, and work cooperatively with instructional staff. Ability to maintain student safety, reinforce established rules, protect school property, and keep students focused on assigned tasks.
