QUALIFICATIONS As partners in the instructional process, paraeducator who work in programs supported by Title I/31a funds must meet one of the following requirements:
• High school graduate or equivalent (GED)
• Associate's Degree or 60 semester hours at an institution of higher education, or Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through passage of a formal state or local academic assessment approved by the State Board of Education or
• Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Paraeducator Readiness Exam (MTTC) or the original Basic Skills Test (MTTC) or
• A passing score of at least 480 on the evidence-based reading and writing section of the SAT and 530 on the mathematics section in lieu of the Basic Skills Test or Professional Readiness Exam or
• ETS Parapro Assessment – A passing score of 460 is required
• Title I or Skipped Title I Schools require #1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 above achieved prior to being hired or applicant will be hired as a substitute until achieved.
• Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) Trained or willing to be trained.
• Must be able to bend, twist, stoop, squat and lift up to 50 pounds in assisting students, if needed.
• Must be able to sign and demonstrate ability according to age level of student.
• Must be able to understand the child's sign and assist child in communicating with others in the building.
• Previous experience working with hearing impaired students preferred. Must participate in on going in-service related to needs of hearing impaired students.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
• Ability to understand the relationship of hearing to developing language and speech in children.
• Expected to be sufficiently competent in sign language to communicate with students in classroom or informal settings.
• Must be capable and willing to take direction from the teacher.
• Accompany and participate in all classroom activities, field trips, etc.
• Expected to attend all appropriate staff development in-service/workshop activities held during the school day.
• Ability to demonstrate the use of good judgment in assuring the safety of the students.
• Ability to demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with parents and staff.
• Ability to be flexible to accept a temporary change in assignment in an emergency situation as determined to be necessary by the building principal.
• Ability to exercise good judgment and calm demeanor in handling behavior problems.
• Maintain confidentiality and respect for each student's privacy as defined by FERPA.
• Perform other duties or tasks necessary to insure the success of students and the program.
• Conducts him/herself in a professional manner commensurate with his/her position and project a good public image of the School District in dealing with the community and employee groups.
