POSITION TITLE: SUBSTITUTE TEACHER REPORTS TO: BUILDING PRINCIPAL PAY: $150.00 DAILY RATE JOB SUMMARY:
Position is responsible for teaching the assigned subject and enabling each student to pursue his/her education in the absence of the regular teacher. ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Reports to the designated individual upon arrival at the school
• Reviews lesson plans and schedules to be followed during the day
• Maintains established routines and procedures of the school and classroom to which assigned
• Teaches the lesson plans outlined by the regular classroom teacher
• Assumes responsibility for overseeing pupil behavior in class, during lunch and in other activity periods
• Maintains maximum supervision of assigned students at all times
• Reports in writing on the day's activities at the conclusion of each teaching day
• Follows all policies, rules and procedures
• Remains in the building during the hours assigned as a substitute
• Models non discriminatory practices in all activities
• Performs related tasks as deemed necessary by the principal or designee
JOB SPECIFICATIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires standing, walking, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor's degree preferred. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent with at least 30 semester hours from an accredited institution of higher learning, verified by transcript.
• Substitute pay $150.00 per day - long term assignments (more than 20 days in the same position) will be paid at a higher rate.
• Portsmouth Public Schools requires substitutes to work a minimum of 1 day per school year to remain active.
