About this role

Reports To: Principal FLSA Status: Non-Exempt General Definition of Work The job of the Behavior Interventionist Teacher is to work with students and instructional staff to offer effective behavioral management strategies that promote behavior, attitude and self-awareness for students to continue instructional success in the classroom. The behavior interventionist has the primary responsibility to utilize effective strategies with the students in areas such as de-escalation, avoiding power struggles, life-space interviewing for the purpose of teaching the student self-regulation techniques, and returning to the classroom. In addition, the Behavior Interventionist Teacher will provide supervision for students who are assigned to the In-School Suspension classroom, and he/she will work with the students to effectively reflect on the behavior that led to the consequences. Rock Hill Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time. Essential Functions

• Work with students as needed throughout the day with the intent of promoting safety, crisis management, and student self-regulation.

• Provide supervision for students who are assigned to the In-School Suspension classroom.

• Review in-school suspension policies, procedures, and student expectations with students daily.

• Work with students and/or other staff members during student reflection period on issues such as behavior management and the prevention of undesirable behaviors that resulted in student being assigned to ISS.

• Monitor all ISS assignments; provide encouragement and feedback to students, monitor tests, computer work, and provide instructional assistance as appropriate.

• Work with the Dean of Students, the CMA, and a “caseload” of students and collect data on frequency, duration and intensity of specific behaviors to assist in behavior management.

• Work with parents, community resources and other stakeholders to reinforce “wrap-around” services.

• Supplement instruction for identified students in/during small groups.

• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Skills require experience in working with and mentoring adolescents. Certification in CPI or open to becoming CPI certified; willing to hold small group meetings, experience in basic data collection of behaviors (frequency, duration, intensity). Knowledge is required to perform basic math, read and follow instructions; and understand written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes age-appropriate concepts of grammar and punctuation safety practices and procedures of child development. Applicants must have the ability to interpret and establish appropriate rules, methods, and techniques in maintaining a disciplined academic environment. Applicants must have strong interpersonal skills and patience. Abilities are required to schedule activities and/or meetings; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. All Instructional Paraprofessionals are required to meet one of the following three requirements prior to beginning employment. Transcripts and/or documentation must be uploaded to the application.

• Minimum employment requirements; high school diploma.

• At least two years of study (60 semester hours) at an accredited institution of higher education; or

• An associate's degree (or higher); or

• An approved state or local academic assessment.

• A combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities required may be considered

Special Requirements

• Must have and maintain a valid Driver's License or ability to provide own transportation

• Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings

Physical Requirements/Work Conditions

• Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear.

• Frequently required to reach with hands and arms and occasionally required to sit.

• Frequently squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward.

• Frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this position.

• Must be able to occasionally lift or physically support students during the day in compliance with safety guidelines.

• May occasionally push/pull items such as tables and seating. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

• Will regularly work indoors and may occasionally work outdoors.

• Will work near moving mechanical equipment and may occasionally work near or with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays.

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

• Frequent interruptions and immediate attention to unexpected situations are expected.
