About this role

Job summary

An exciting opportunity exists to appoint talented Clinical Fellows to the Breast Surgery Department at Guy's Hospital.

The successful candidate(s) will join a hardworking, passionate team of 7 Consultants, 8 Clinical Fellows , ANPs and will work closely with our Breast Care Nurse CNS team.

Appointees will gain a multitude of experience including running the one stop clinic and follow ups, weekly theatre lists (inc. reconstruction and joint oncoplastic cases), ward rounds and MDM. The post holder will participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care and to assist with service developments. The post holder will also contribute to the management of the clinical service and to service developments.

Main duties of the job

The Fellow's Breast Service responsibilities will include:

Operating sessions (Assisting)

Outpatient clinics (this will include clinics crosssite at Lewisham Hospital UHL)

Multidisciplinary team meetings, including case preparation

Ward round and daytime bleep holder

To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care

To participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training

About us

Breast Surgery is part of the Surgical Oncology directorate. It performs over 500 surgical procedures each year, of varying case mix and complexity. It receives up to 185 referrals per week, with a mixture of both cancer and non-cancer cases.

As part of an academic health sciences centre, you will have ample opportunity to participate in our research programs and audit. Education and clinical supervision is available for all post holders to facilitate appraisal and revalidation. Please note that this post is not recognised by the Deanery for training.

All candidates must be registered with the General Medical Council. Prior NHS experience is preferable, minimum 1 year Breast experience is required.

Job description Job responsibilities

Clinical:

The postholder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of services to the Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust to include:

(a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients of the trust in such hospitals, health centres or clinics or other premises as required.

(b) Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.

Training of junior staff:

The postholder will take responsibility for the training and direction of junior staff allocated to him/her under aegis of the training plan that that postholder has agreed with their supervising consultant.

Clinical Governance:

All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal.

Qualifications Essential

Full GMC Registration and hold a licence to practise

Desirable

Specialty qualification, and/or higher degree

Experience Essential

Comprehensive clinical experience in Breast Surgery

Desirable

Experience in the NHS Experience in clinical guideline development Experience in clinical guideline development

Skills Essential

Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team Experience of undergraduate teaching and post graduate training

Desirable

Advanced surgical skills for breast and onco-plastic procedures

Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research
