Job summary
This is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic and dynamic nurse to lead our National Psychosis Unit service and work with the already established multidisciplinary team who are highly skilled and dedicated to the service users they work with. The role involves regular contact with the Clinical Service Manager, General Manager and nursing directorate colleagues to help ensure the Ward Manager feels confident and supported in their role, in addition to continued professional development opportunities and a Trust-wide Staff Support Service and networks to help you connect with others within SLaM and beyond.
Main duties of the job
- Overall service management, responsible for the delivery of a specialist inpatient service.
- Management of Nursing care and practice, ensuring that all nursing practice is developed using up to date evidence-based practice, and that all nursing staff have the appropriate skill base and support mechanisms to access training to work with the service user group.
- Management of financial and material resources, ensuring these are managed within the allocated budget.
- Setting, monitoring and evaluating clinical standards of care and practice in liaison with Clinical Service Manager and Nursing management.
- Management of Human Resources, maintaining the efficient use of staffing resources on the ward ensuring staffing levels are safe and appropriate and contain the necessary skill mix on each shift.
- Environmental management, adhering to environmental and clinical safety standards at all times.
- Personal development and Freedom to Act, being prepared to physically move between sites as needed and remaining up to date with current developments and practice in your clinical area.
-Deputising for the matron as required. They may also undertake site wide co-ordination roles as required, eg. DSN when needed.
- Communicating with service users and carers, nursing team and other professionals on a daily basis.

The post holder will provide inspirational leadership to the team. They will be responsible for the effective operational management of the National Psychosis Unit ensuring integrated clinical, operational, quality and financial outcomes are achieved.
The post holder will provide line management and leadership to the charge nurses and therapists within the service to maximise effectiveness and efficiency of the service.
To be responsible for the delivery of care within the National Psychosis Unit, in accordance with Trust policies and national standards for a tertiary specialist rehabilitation service.
To lead a team with a broad range of physical and mental health skills in the delivery of high quality, evidence-based practice.
To lead on service developments such as quality improvement projects.
To have overall management responsibility for the delivery of care within the unit, in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
To lead a team of nursing and therapy staff in the delivery of high quality evidence-based practice, ensuring that regular supervision and appraisal take place.
To manage administrative and operational resources in a cost- effective manner, evaluating the standard of service delivered.
To co-ordinate multidisciplinary working, maintaining excellent communication and working relationships with all team members, and other services within the Trust, to ensure effective interface and continuity of care between disciplines and services.
The post holder will carry out nursing procedures to a standard that ensures safe and effective care, and complies with The Nursing and Midwifery Council's Code of Professional Conduct. There is an expectation that the post holder will place the needs of service users at the centre of care delivery.

Qualifications Essential
Registered Nurse (Mental Health/Learning Disability) SLTP Training Evidence of continuing professional development BSc in Mental Health Nursing or equivalent
Desirable
Management course Practice Supervisor and/or Practice Assessor preparation in line with NMC Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment (SSSA)
Experience Essential
Substantial experience of managing clinical practice. Experience of implementing and monitoring standards of care. Experience of providing clinical and managerial supervision. Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team. Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment and knowledge of methods to develop culturally sensitive practice. Experience of recruitment and selection of staff. Specialist clinical knowledge relevant to the service, including evidence-based practice Working knowledge of all relevant legislation associated with acute mental health care, including MHA, CPA procedures, Human Rights Act, NSF, Child Protection and NHS Plan. Understanding of the role and function of other organisations providing services to people with mental ill-health.
