We are looking for an experienced Director to join our Leadership Team at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust to lead and develop our Corporate Governance, Legal and Assurance functions across the Trust.

The Director of Corporate Governance, Legal and Assurance will have a remit in relation to being strategic leader for all matters relating to the Trusts corporate governance, legal and assurance requirements, working closely with the Trusts Chair, CEO, Deputy CEO and the wider Board and Executive Team. This is a key leadership role which will focus on supporting our improvement journey.

This role is part of the Corporate Leadership Team reporting directly to the Deputy Chief Executive.

The ideal candidate will be a successful experienced legal and/or corporate governance professional with significant experience within a complex public sector organisation and system experience would be an advantage.

Main duties of the job

As a senior leader in the Trust, the Director of Corporate Governance, Legal and Assurance is accountable for all matters relating to Corporate Affairs, the commissioning and provision of legal services and to ensure that the board receives the relevant assurance from across the Trust.The Director of Corporate Governance, Legal and Assurance will have a wide ranging portfolio across a range of important functions and will work closely with the Executive Team to ensure that the Trust has a strong focus on oversight and improvement to support it to achieve the effective governance and assurance that it needs to be a well governed organisation.

Working with the wider executive team and external stakeholders, you will focus on supporting the development of a culture to ensure that we provide safe and effective high quality care for our patients and staff at County Durham and Darlington.

As a key leader in our organisation, you will have a track record in matrix working, leading successful teams and services. You will play a vital role in delivering our ambitious agenda, supporting the CEO and Deputy CEO in developing the organisations future strategy to ensure that the Trust can provide high quality services which are fit for the future for the population of Durham and Darlington.

About us

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Registered professional qualification such as solicitor/legal executive/fellow of ICSA or CCSA Masters level qualification in relevant subject Evidence of professional based learning

Desirable

Regulatory experience within the NHS Significant senior leadership experience in the NHS

Special Skills and Knowledge Essential

In depth knowledge and understanding of corporate Governance legislation and best practice and able to evidence practical interpretation and application of this within a complex organisation. A proven knowledge of the regulatory framework and related compliance issues related to health services Results orientated with a track record of success and taking responsibility for decision making Portfolio of legal experience and able to demonstrate work with NHS organisations to achieve best value.

Desirable

Understanding and knowledge of complex regulatory matters. Evidence of networks within the NHS and across other organisations.

Experience Essential

Senior professional with extensive experience of high level leadership and management within the NHS Experience of implementing legal and Corporate Governance arrangements within a complex NHS environment. Experienced in using well-developed influencing skills to work effectively across a wide range of teams at all levels in the organisation. Leading change in complex environments

Desirable

Senior leadership experience within the NHS Strong track record of success working directly with individuals working in the regulatory environment. Experience of working with and providing advice to senior executives and board members within the NHS.

Personal Attributes Essential

Experience of management and oversight of complex litigation.
