Job Description Position Summary: We are hiring a Project Software Engineer to join our FactoryTalk Design Studio (FTDS) development team. In this role, you will be a hands-on software engineer—designing, writing, and delivering code—while also serving as the day-to-day product owner for your team. You will help define and prioritize the backlog, translate business and customer needs into well-formed user stories and acceptance criteria, and guide delivery in partnership with engineering, product, and project stakeholders. You will also develop software tools including operating systems, compilers, utilities, databases and Internet-related tools. This role is hybrid out of Mayfield Heights, OH and reports to the Manager, Software Engineering.
Your Responsibilities:
• Own and prioritize the team backlog, ensuring work is aligned to product goals, customer needs, and delivery commitments. • Write and refine user stories, acceptance criteria, and feature definitions to ensure efficient execution by you and your team. • Partner with product management and stakeholders to clarify requirements, make tradeoff decisions, and sequence work for maximum value delivery while supporting sprint planning and story readiness. • Design, write, test, and maintain production software while guiding system- and component-level design decisions that balance performance, security, robustness, schedule, and maintainability. • Manage dependencies and risks, while overseeing the planning, execution, and integration of software features. • Troubleshoot complex functional and performance issues across components or subsystems. • Provide technical direction and mentorship to engineers contributing to the project while also leading by example through hands-on implementation, code reviews, and story execution. • Ensure adherence to software development lifecycle processes, including design reviews, code reviews, documentation, and release readiness. • Contribute to and review system-level documentation, including design specifications, integration plans, and risk assessments. • Maintain code quality, organization, and automation, including test strategies and CI/CD best practices
The Essentials – You Will Have:
• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent years of relevant work experience. • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
The Preferred – You May Also Have:
• Typically requires 8+ years of experience in Software development using TypeScript, NodeJs, Kotlin, GraphQL, .Net, Python and Angular or comparable modern web technologies. • Demonstrated experience leading technical aspects of software projects beyond individual feature ownership. • Experience building or managing a team backlog, writing user stories, and defining acceptance criteria in an Agile environment. • Demonstrated ability to balance technical leadership with product ownership responsibilities for a development team. • Experience designing and integrating scalable, distributed systems. • Experience with container technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud-native architectures. • Hands-on experience with software development lifecycle processes, including Agile methodologies • Knowledge of Agile principles and participation in iterative planning. • Experience building and integrating platforms using multiple protocols (e.g., HTTPS, JSON, RPC, or WebSocket). • Experience configuring or guiding build and release pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions and FluxCD. • Exposure to or experience in the manufacturing or industrial automation domain. • Experience using generative AI tools to improve development productivity (e.g., GitHub Copilot)
