Our Software Development Engineers (SDEs) use modern technology to solve complex problems while seeing their work's impact first-hand. As an SDE-I, you'll own the entire lifecycle of your code — from design through deployment and ongoing operations. You will design and build scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems using cloud-native architectures and microservices. You'll work in an agile environment practising CI/CD principles, participate in code reviews, contribute to technical documentation, and take part in on-call operational responsibilities. Key job responsibilities - Design, develop, and deploy scalable microservices using Java and Spring Boot (or equivalent frameworks) in a large distributed computing environment hosted on AWS - Write clean, maintainable, production-quality code with comprehensive unit and integration test coverage - Build and operate resilient distributed systems that are fault-tolerant, horizontally scalable, and cost-effective - Participate in technical design discussions, code reviews, and architectural decision-making with cross-disciplinary teams - Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines for automated build, test, and deployment workflows - Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve production issues; participate in on-call rotations to ensure 24/7 system availability - Leverage and contribute to the development of GenAI and AI-powered tools to enhance development productivity - Collaborate effectively with international, multilingual teams across multiple time zones Basic Qualifications - Education (must meet one): Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree or above in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Data Science, or a closely related STEM field with a minimum of 60 ECTS credits in programming, algorithms, and systems coursework OR Completed Bachelor's or Graduate degree in the specified fields - Expected graduation between October 2025 – September 2026, OR graduated within the last 24 months from the date of application - Java programming proficiency: Minimum 1 year of demonstrated hands-on experience developing applications in Java (academic projects, internships, or professional work), including practical use of object-oriented design patterns (encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction) and the Java Collections Framework - Spring Framework experience: Demonstrated experience building or contributing to applications using Spring Boot or Spring MVC, including dependency injection, RESTful API development, and basic configuration management - Data structures and algorithms: Demonstrated practical experience implementing and applying core data structures (arrays, linked lists, hash maps, trees, graphs, queues) and algorithms (sorting, searching, recursion, dynamic programming, graph traversal) — evidenced through coursework grades, competitive programming, or project deliverables - SQL and relational databases: Hands-on experience writing SQL queries (SELECT, JOIN, GROUP BY, subqueries) and working with at least one relational database system (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, or equivalent) including basic schema design and data modelling - Version control with Git: Demonstrated experience using Git for collaborative software development, including branching, merging, pull requests, and conflict resolution in a team environment - Cloud computing fundamentals: Basic practical experience with at least one major cloud platform (AWS preferred; Azure or GCP acceptable), including deploying applications to cloud infrastructure and understanding of core services (compute instances, object storage, managed databases, serverless functions) - Testing and quality assurance: Experience writing automated unit tests and integration tests using established testing frameworks (JUnit, TestNG, Mockito, or equivalent for Java; pytest or equivalent for Python) with demonstrated understanding of test-driven development principles - Software development lifecycle: Demonstrated exposure to at least one full development cycle - from requirements analysis through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance - via internship (minimum 3 months), capstone project, or equivalent professional experience - CI/CD fundamentals: Basic understanding of continuous integration and continuous deployment concepts, including experience with at least one CI/CD tool (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, AWS CodePipeline, or equivalent) - Communication - English: Professional working proficiency in English (B2 level minimum on CEFR scale), sufficient to participate in technical design discussions, write technical documentation, and collaborate daily with international teams in English as the primary working language Preferred Qualifications - Previous technical internship(s) of 6+ months in a software engineering role - Experience with microservices architecture and distributed systems design patterns - Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes, ECS) - Experience with NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, MongoDB, Redis) - Exposure to AI/ML concepts, GenAI tools, or machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch) - Experience with monitoring and observability tools (CloudWatch, Grafana, Datadog) - Knowledge of cybersecurity fundamentals (OWASP Top 10, secure coding practices, identity management) - Additional language proficiency (German, Luxembourgish) is an advantage - Contributions to open-source projects or published technical work - Experience with agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and tools (Jira, Confluence) Amazon is an equal opportunities employer.
