Education: Bachelor's degree. Mechanical engineering/mechanical technology/technician. or equivalent experience. Work setting: Estimating. Quantity surveying. Manufacturing or processing industry. Fabrication. Tasks: Prepare estimates of labour and/or material costs. Read blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine work requirements . Operate CADD and other computer software systems. Provide economic feasibility studies and preliminary estimates for proposed projects. Create and submit estimate reports, quote sheets and bids forms. Liaise, consult and communicate with engineers, architects, owners, contractors and subcontractors on changes and adjustments to cost estimates. Prepare budget and cost estimates. Prepare and submit construction project budget estimates. Develop specifications for equipment, materials and supplies to be purchased. Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, charts and tables. Obtain price quotations from catalogues and suppliers. Computer and technology knowledge: Estimating packages. Spreadsheet.
