Role Summary

The post holder will deliver high-quality care to patients with oral and maxillofacial conditions, with a particular focus on head and neck cancer. The role includes clinical, administrative, teaching, and leadership responsibilities within the Head & Neck and Maxillofacial teams.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

Provide high-quality care to oral, maxillofacial and head & neck cancer patients. Participate in the 2-week wait cancer pathway, running a dedicated parallel clinic with a consultant. Attend and actively contribute to Head & Neck MDT meetings and post-MDT clinics. Ensure patients are appropriately staged and listed for MDT discussion within required timeframes. Manage the weekly major head & neck theatre list. Undertake middle-grade duties on the maxillofacial rota. Train in all aspects of maxillofacial and head & neck cancer surgery, including tumour resection and reconstruction. Maintain good communication with patients to support shared decision-making.

On call will be based in John Radcliffe Hospital but need to cross cover Churchill site.

On call as per rota, 1 in 8 middle grade cover

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Full GMC with licence to practice MBBS or equivalent medical qualification BDS or equivalent dental qualification

Desirable

MRCS, FRCS (Maxillofacial) Attendance at relevant courses, e.g. Flap course, microvascular course Post CCT

Experience Essential

At least 3 years of clinical experience in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at registrar/ middle grade level. Competent to perform basic maxillofacial surgery and ability to manage head and neck in-patients.

Desirable

Operating experience in head and neck oncology including reconstruction and microvascular anastomosis Evidence of commitment to head and neck oncology surgery.

Skills Essential

Awareness of own limitations & when to ask for help Communication Skills: Capacity to communicate effectively & sensitively with others, able to discuss treatment options with patients in a way they can understand Activity: Must be able to run clinics and theatre lists with reduced supervision MUST BE FLUENT IN SPOKEN AND WRITTEN ENGLISH Problem Solving: Capacity to think beyond the obvious, with analytical and flexible mind. Capacity to bring a range of approaches to problem solving Situation Awareness: Capacity to monitor and anticipate situations that may change rapidly Decision Making: Demonstrates effective judgement and decision-making skills and safe clinical practice Leadership & Team Involvement: Capacity to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team & demonstrate leadership when appropriate. Capacity to establish good working relations with others Organisation & Planning: Capacity to manage time and prioritise workload, balance urgent & important demands, follow instructions. Understands importance & impact of information systems
