About this role

Job summary

We are recruiting for a Nurse Team Leader-Lister Macmillan Cancer Centre who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

The post holder will work as part of a team in the Lister Macmillan Cancer Centre to provide patients with holistic, evidence-based care as they undergo systemic anti-cancer therapies for cancer.

This will involve carrying out pre-treatment checks, venipuncture, cannulation, patient assessment and observation, administration of medications, support of junior colleagues and working collaboratively with a broad, multi-disciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

Promote, review and develop high standards of professional practice, competencies, protocols and high quality care delivery within Trust and Departmental policies, protocols and guidelines.

In conjunction with the Nurse Team Manager, to be responsible for the organisation, delivery and evaluation of nursing care for patients within the department, ensuring that all members of the team deliver excellent patient care within the framework of the relevant policies and procedures.

Deputise for the Nurse Team Manager in their absence in all aspects of operational management.

To be a visible presence on the unit and co-ordinate the nursing service

Demonstrate competence & confidence in management of a cohort of Cancer patients in LMCC

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training Essential

Active, current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Educated to degree level in adult nursing or a health-related subject Some familiarity with different types of cancer treatments and their side effects Chemotherapy course completed (band 6) or (band 5) demonstrates willingness to undertake

Desirable

Post-registration qualifications in the field of oncology and / or chemotherapy Advanced communication course

Previous Experience Essential

Post-registration experience as a registered nurse in an acute setting. Experience working with cancer patients in a medical setting Experience communicating sensitively with people who are distressed or in need of emotional support

Desirable

Familiarity with the Chemocare prescription management system

Skills Essential

Experience in the administration of cytotoxic chemotherapy To be competent in venepuncture and cannulation Previous exposure to central venous access devices To demonstrate expert knowledge and skills in the management of the changing healthcare needs of the patient, responding to changes promptly and appropriately and developing specialised plans of care/ follow relevant protocols in collaboration with other senior nurses/ medical staff

Knowledge Essential

Awareness of different cancer types and treatment modalities Keeps up to date with developments in health and nursing Demonstrate an understanding of teams, their dynamics and how to motivate team members to participate and complete tasks To be competent in managing challenging situations that may arise, (i.e. managing conflict.)

Experience and evidence of engagement around equality, diversity and inclusion issues in relation to policy, service development and service delivery in respect of both services to users and the management of staff Role model our Trust values every day
