About this role

Job summary

To provide specialist speech & language therapy interventions for patients on the in-patient stroke rehabilitation ward. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to achieve the best possible outcome for patients following stroke. Also, at Freeman Hospital to provide assessment and management of patients with other diagnosis in the acute phase of their recovery i.e. medical, cardi, and respiratory wards. We use Videofluorscopy and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing to assess dysphagia and we are one of the leading units in the North of England to use Pharyngeal Electrical Stimulation in the treatment of dysphagia.The Adult Speech & Language Therapy Team is full of expertise across a large range of specialist areas. Our successful candidate will be very well supported in their journey to becoming a Specialist; achieving Dysphagia competencies is a priority.

Main duties of the job

To assess stroke patients on the rehabilitation unit To assess patients with other conditions on a range of wards To provide care plans To provide intervention where appropriate To advise ward staff and relatives on strategies for eating and drinking and communication

Person Specification

Qualifications & Education Essential

Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent Registered with Health & Care Professions Council Licence to Practice from RCSLT Valid driving licence

Desirable

Undergraduate dysphagia modules

Knowledge & Experience Essential

Undergraduate or previous speech and language therapy experience including work with an adult caseload Knowledge of communication and swallowing disorders in adults Familiarity with a range of assessments and therapeutic approaches for adults Awareness of dysphagia management Some experience of working with teams Some experience of working with teams

Desirable

Audit and research principles Dysphagia assessment Previous work experience with adults

Skills & Abilities Essential

Basic teaching, training and presentation skills Good communication skills Good organisation and time management skills Ability to assess communication disorders Excellent computer skills Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team Ability to work on own initiative Highly developed auditory and perceptual skills
