Job summary The Cancer Team at The Princess Alexandra Hospital are looking to appoint a Band 7 Macmillan Lower GI Cancer Nurse Specialist.
This is a unique opportunity for any nurse who has extensive experience as a senior band 6 or band 7 within GI medicine and/or cancer care who wishes to expand their clinical skills and knowledge to help support and develop an expanding service.
Main duties of the job The nurse will be a highly visible presence across the speciality and wards, working to ensure the highest standards of care, setting and maintaining standards of clinical excellence and continuously improving experiences for patients, families and carers.
The patient experience will be a priority for you with a strong emphasis on compassion and dignity. You will be supported by an experienced and committed management team.
For this role you will need to have: A current NMC Nursing registration Relevant post reg experience Possession of excellent communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills coupled with evidence of continuing professional development. A flexible approach to work

Main duties of the job
Princess Alexandra Hospital diagnoses over 150 new lower GI cancers a year and the role of the Lower GI cancer nursing team is to provide a specialist service to support patients through this journey.
The post holder will work under the direction of the Macmillan Head of Nursing for Cancer to deliver a supportive nursing service for patients and their families undergoing treatment and investigation for lower GI cancer within the Princess Alexandra Trust.
The Macmillan Lower GI Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist will be required:
To provide specialist, high quality, expert nursing care and support for patients and their carers with a lower GI cancer diagnosis To deliver evidence based individualised patient care according to patient’s changing health care needs, through holistic needs assessment (HNA) To work autonomously and seek collaborative relationships with others across and within professional boundaries. To develop patient pathways and be responsible for developing the nursing service To provide expert knowledge and advice in own specialist area, ensuring maintenance of clinical excellence underpinned by evidence-based practice To work with the Multidisciplinary team (MDT) and Cancer Management Team to ensure that the service complies with the national standards for safety and quality To act as a visible role model and expert practitioner
Key Responsibilities
To perform an effective key role within the MDT to deliver cancer waiting times targets and pathways communication. To act as a specialist resource for patients and the clinical team by providing comprehensive advice, information, teaching and training both within PAHT and externally. Update own clinical and specialist knowledge. Contribute in audit processes. Undertake, where appropriate, nursing research with published outcomes. Promote excellence in clinical practice, and the setting of quality standards within specialty. Active involvement in the development of the service locally and nationally. Clinical Excellence. Qualifications Essential
Registered Nurse Undergraduate degree Recognised teaching or mentorship qualification Post registration qualification relevant to specialty Evidence of continued professional development
Desirable
Masters degree or working towards Advanced Assessment skills Independent Nurse Prescribing course or willingness to undertake Advanced Communication skills training Level 2 Psychological skills training
Experience Essential
Substantial post-registration experience in GI medicine and/or oncology Previous experience in a post involving clinical and managerial responsibilities Evidence of teaching and experience of developing teaching materials Demonstrate evidence of highly developed clinical practice Knowledge of current advances and pathways of care relevant to specialty Proven evidence of improving the patient experience

Experience of undertaking nurse led clinics Previous experience of working as a clinical nurse specialist Previous experience of research and audit
